PostPosted: Wed May 28, 2008 4:05 pm    Post subject: Platformer RPG [quote]

I was thinking of starting on a "small" project and trying to make a complete game. I'm probably not gonna start on a traditional top-view rpg before I have a solid map editor and since coding editors is boring, I thought I could do something else. I was thinking I could get away with a less advanced editor for a platformer so I'm thinking of going with a platformer rpg.

The idea is to have platformer combat mechanics with hack and slash or guns or whatever, but keep the entire rpg concept of leveling up, digging through heavy story, hunting npcs, etc.

My question is, how many of you guys would like to play such a game? I'm mostly doing this for myself and because it's fun but if people would not completely hate the idea, it would be nice knowing there is some support from people.

I was thinking of going in the non-tech direction where you still have the cliche rpg weapons like swords, lances and whatnot and of course the magic attacks. So I wouldn't really want to go with fire weapons and stuff as I think that would remind people too much of regular platformers. And the idea with an rpg is to tell a good story and take the payer away from reality, not put him into a different place in our world.

Great, thanx guys. I have this shmup dev compo with monday or tuesday as deadline, I think, so I probably won't be coding anything before that. But I'll try to get some of the design and story up and share that with you.

I was thinking of creating a platformer RPG as well, though I was going to have regular RPG combat mechanics instead of platformer combat.

I was planning on working on some other games first though.

In any case, I think it's a good idea. (Obviously, I wouldn't be planning to work on it if I didn't.)

A refreshing change from the cookiecutter top-down Final Fantasy clones. I loved Zelda II that did just this kind of thing (though I guess I'm the only one who did, heh,) so I would definitely play it.

Wicked, so many people being positive about this inspires me even more.

So has Zelda 2 side-view? Or how is it different?

valderman: heh, I didn't see you were from gothenburg. I'm from there too, just moved to London a couple of months ago, got tired of Chalmers :P

Not so! I loved it as well, perhaps more than the original.

Ah cool, I need to check that one out then. It's a bit surprising so many people seem interested in this kind of game. I would have thought everyone is a hardcore SNES fan and doesn't like anything that doesn't use the secret of mana or ff tilesets :P

Can's say I blame you, I had my location set to Japan until a week ago (exchange studies.)

Really? what happened with that? Are you going? If you took Japanese at GU this spring you probably were in the same class as my girlfriend.

If you want a good example of this kind of RPG, check out Exile for the TurboGrafx CD and Sega Genesis. Exile: Wicked Phenomenon is the same kind of game but it's a bit broken.

Actually, I spent this spring semester in Hirakata, Osaka, so I probably don't know her. Unless she's a second year, that is, then I might at least recognise her.
