I thought I'd share what I've been working on instead of the ASCII contest :) This is "We Love Mind Control Rocket", my entry into TIGSource's VGNG contest. The idea is that everyone entering has to make a game based on a name generated by this, the videogame name generator.
The game's sort of a resource management thing with RPG battles. Unfortunately I didn't get time to balance it before the deadline, but I'm hoping to do a post contest version in a week or two that balances the game better and includes some of the features I didn't have time to add.
Anyway, here's a few screenshots!

I'd love to know what you all think about it! _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Hey, this is pretty cool! Has a rather unique feel to it, I like the supervillain/mind control idea. Derek did a great job with the art too, and the whole game feels really polished.
Haven't played it too long yet, but I'll let you know how it goes once I get further into it.

EDIT: How do you get plastic, machine parts, and chemicals? I can never increase the production, even if I have what it says I need (eg. $25m and 5 oil for plastic).

Cool :) I'm going to post a quickstart guide in a little while - the game kinda throws you into the deep end at the moment..

Ah, you need to produce the materials locally. So if you want to produce machine parts, for example, you need to already be creating 5 metal in the region where you want to produce them.
(unless you're already doing that and you've come across some serious bug that I missed :o ) _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Come to think of it, I could have handled that better. :( Oh well. Maybe in the new version I'll fix it up a bit. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Unfortunately in my rush for the deadline, I forgot to take out some testing code and the game's unplayably hard as a result. I've uploaded a new version that fixes the problem. Sorry about that :( _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

I haven't played the updated game. Comments on the original upload:- Nice game!
- Opponents don't seem to grow stronger with time. The first fight is very difficult (but not impossible). Subsequent fights are very easy.
- Defeating opponents past the first does not kill them, which makes the game impossible to win. I have observed this both when attacking and when being attacked.
- Game is unplayable in full-screen due to low mouse sensitivity.
- Music stutters when the window loses focus.
- Mind control rockets seem overpriced/underpowered. By the time I can produce chemicals, I can just buy the effects I want.
- Because of the way the orders system works, a single-unit-type army can defeat most mixed armies. 5000 mecha stacks for the win!

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback! I had to cut loads of really basic stuff from the game to just about hit the deadline, and I did exactly that - no testing, no balancing, just a release :( So I'm really adamant about making a new version after the contest voting is over, and this sorta thing really helps!

Wow, you beat the first battle? I'm seriously impressed :D You're not really supposed to be able to in the version I uploaded (the basic problem is that you're attacked too soon to have a decent army).
The other characters are supposed to interact with the world to a certain extent by buying shares/attacking each other/building more units, and so on, but I never got around to implementing that :(

Ah, fixed :)
Quote: | # Game is unplayable in full-screen due to low mouse sensitivity. |
Noted - I think that should be an easy enough fix.
Quote: | # Music stutters when the window loses focus. |
Really? I thought I'd fixed that... Well, I'll look into it, thanks :)

I definitely agree with that - it's one of the big things I plan to change in the balancing.
One way that they are useful is for getting human troops - you can use them to damage a local economy, which will cause militia uprisings. Once it gets bad enough the government will offer you some troops to take care of it.

Hehe, good point... but I'm not really sure how to fix that without totally redoing the battle engine. Any ideas?
Thanks again for the feedback - I'm hoping the new version is a lot more fun to play when it's ready :) _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

OK, I tried the latest version. The music stuttering was fixed, I was able to eliminate all opponents (which did not cause the game to end), and the game locked up on turn 100 with all opponents eliminated. Also, industry bonuses don't seem to work.

I played as Adrianne. For each continent, I bought 30% stock, eliminated all taxes, and set industry to one of each type of resource. By buying stock every single turn, I was able to get a fairly strong economy very soon. Then I invested all of that into mecha. I also picked up some human soldiers from unrest.

Two ideas:
1. If you have more than 1000 units of the same type, break them up into several groups of up to 1000 each.
2. Make each unit type completely incapable of harming the unit against which it is weak. This means you need at least two different unit types in order to win against a mixed force.

Thanks Redslash :)
And thanks again, Rainer! I'm going to make a big update on Friday which will even out the game a bit better!
Just posting to say that the rest of the entries are up now, here. If you don't have time to play them all, at least play Brain Damaged Toon Underworld, My First Skydiving Academy and ROM CHECK FAIL, which are probably my favourites so far. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Hm, cool game. Too bad I suck at it XD.
Edit: I was thinking about the awesomness to make a game based upon a slumped name so I checked out that site.
Exciting Sex Co-Op... is what I got... O_O Anyone good at netbased programming?
Edit2: second try... Amazon Sex Ultra... my karma must be down the drain. _________________

Haha! Wow, what a turnout. There are some great titles here...
Incomprehensible Penguin Arena, Twin Hobo Rocket, ROM CHECK FAIL, and of course, Furry Punching Nitro. I think the screenshot says it all for that one. :p
