At the end of this month, RPGDX is hosting a 48 hour RPG making jam! It starts from whatever time you wake up on Friday the 27th and finishes whatever time you go to bed at on Saturday.
The objective is to create a playable RPG in just 48 hours around the theme LOFI. That could mean anything from (for example) simply using a low resolution, to going all out and making a game in the style of an old 8-bit console, to any other way you choose to interpret the theme.
Usual Guidelines Follow:
You may use a premade engine, premade graphics and premade music - anything you have at hand from old placeholders to ripped spites. You may also opt to start from scratch. That's up to the individual entering. However, the rest of the game's content must be made during the jam's 48 hours - content meaning dialogue, level design, and so on. Collaboration is encouraged!
There will be no voting! Everyone who participates is a winner!
During the jam the IRC channel #indie-rpg on irc.esper.net will be active; feel free to drop in! _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Sounds great! I'm in.
I'm going to try to get some collaboration going with Redslash, and perhaps some art done by an old friend. I'm starting my engine coding the upcoming Monday. _________________ Principal Software Architect

This sounds like fun. It's too early to know if I'll have free time when the contest date rolls around, but I'll mark my calendar.

Ditto. My engine is more or less to the point where I could whip up a decent little game from it. :)

Does the game have to be made for the PC? I don't really do PC coding anymore... _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows. - wallace

I don't see a problem with that :)
I'll probably do all the work for mine over the jam weekend, superman style - I don't really have the time to do much towards it until then. Recently I've been doing a lot of messing around in flash... I might try making an old school flash rpg... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Some mockup screens I've put together to help me get into the groove :D
The game engine scales x4, so the final game play is sitting in an 800x600 window.
I'm using a stripped down version of my ged101 engine library to build the game engine for my entry.
My plan:
FEB 1 - 7 - get a walk-around demo of the engine running (single scrolling map)
FEB 8 - 14 - multiple maps and warp triggers and NPCs running
FEB 15 - 21 - battle engine running
FEB 22 - 26 - game menus running
FEB 27 - 28 - contest time! scramble to create story, dialogue, maps, and test/debug the game!
:D this is going to be fun. _________________ Principal Software Architect

Doh, that's probably the only weekend this year that I'm not home, heh. Oh well, I'll just have to wait for the next compo and play your entries this time :)

Anyone who cares, my entry screenshots, downloads, and project are setup here http://gitorious.org/projects/48h2009minirpgjamentry/pages/Home
Of course there aren't any downloads yet since its not jam-time yet :D
I've mainly been drawing 'screenshots' in mspaint in order to have a master plan to follow. The map engine and battle engine are currently being written, and my artist is working his fingers off pixeling sprites for me.
..am I the only one who is preparing for this?..just wondering..... _________________ Principal Software Architect

I'll probably prepare some engine code after the 16th - I'm quite tempted to start from scratch though, just for the whole old school appeal of it... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

I would join, but I don't have the free time. I look forward to seeing your guys' entries, though. _________________ "Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness."
