I was thinking about the challenges of moderating a board that allows guest posting. I recognized that there would be no way of knowing in advance whether a given guest poster was known (and previously banned) troll. The same problem applies to registered users, therefore in the policing of the forum deductive logic is always a necessity. In that case, why give everyone moderation powers? I was reading about organizational ethics and have been influenced somewhat by what I read: key to notions of morality, the text claims, are notions of original position (John Rawls) which compel one to uphold rules only in so much as one would not object to being bound by them in such a situation as they were applicable to oneself; in other words, "do unto others...". My idea would give everyone moderation powers, however at the risk of being banned themselves if the moderator disagrees with them. It makes everyone a moderator and yet leaves room for accountability. Moderator's discretion is removed: if the moderator disagrees with a moderatory act, then they are compelled to ban the user who performed it and trigger the social consequences created by the same. They must be held responsible for their opinions: their biases, if they have any, will be laid bare for the judgment of the community.
