I finally got around to writing a review of Matt Barton's book, "Dungeons and Desktops - The History of Computer Role-Playing Games."
Review of Dungeons & Desktops
Short Version:
It's a pretty comprehensive history of western CRPGs, starting from the "Dark Ages" of mainstream university computers up through the middle of the first decade of 2000. It's hard to find an RPG published through traditional channels that isn't mentioned in the book.
It does talk about console RPGs and MMOs as well, but these are not the focus of the book.
Would I recommend it? To the right people, absolutely. Which probably means everybody in this forum. We're all part of the niche audience. If you are fascinated by CRPGs and actually have some insight already about their history, it's a very fun and worthy read. _________________ Tales of the Rampant Coyote - Old-School Game Developer talks Indie Games, RPGs, and the Games Biz
