I am currently cosidering the purcase of an Apple. (one of the g4's) At any rate my curiosity has gotten my id and super-ego into a deathgrip and now I feel compelled to explore its possibilities. However one thing drifts to the forefront of this consumer nightmare. What are the programming possibilities with a mac? I mean to say, I know that the freeware/shareware community is much smaller, but is the quality as good, worse or better? Will I be stranded with only my PC as my gaming forge, or will I find a wonderful new world of possibility awaiting on those distant shores?
Perhaps one of you who has made this intepid voyage for me could share a few rumors and tales of this land known as "apple" or even provide me with some reliable sea charts? My thanks to you all. And wish me well.

(heads of to make sure the first mate has not broken into the rum casks again, and subsequently found his way down to the powder room for a nice relaxing pipe smoke)

There are lots of great dev tools available for the mac, and for free, too.

Okay, if you're thinking about making games for the mac, you should try idevgames.com. Also, Janus is right, there are good free tools that come with OS X.

That is all.

If you're running OSX, which is, truthfully, mostly useless otherwise, you still have gcc. And with the mighty gcc, comes Allegro, also SDL. Worshipful programming content, no?

So I don't see why you'd really have a problem. You get all the benefits of Open Source on the Apple platform, so why not?

... well, I wouldn't, mostly due to the cost, and difficulty of repairing a machine that's not really "off the shelf." But hey, that's poor, poor, poor me. :)

Mac OS X in addition of a patch is 100% compatible with Linux/Unix. I heard (this is not sure) that GCC is included, so you can program and be mostly compatible with PC. Mac is today a great workstation... Apple tend toward 100% PC compatibility with Mac to increase their sales... That's all I know...

OS X isn't 100% compatible with Linux, but it is pretty solid as far as Unix support goes. OS X is a Unix OS, not a Linux one, and it lacks some of the features Linux has so not all Linux apps will port properly (but most of them will with minor tweaks).

Linux is architectured like Unix... No? I was meaning that porting a code in Linux or Unix do not need a lot of changes like Win32 to Linux...

I didn't know that Unix compatibility in MacOS X was always present... forgive me for the mistake guys!

Many thanks for the replies, most helpful.
I think I'll go ahead and pick one up then.
Hopefully enough of my work will be transfered to the comp soon, so I can show you a little peek at what's to come. (So many notebooks, so little time)
Farewell until next time.
