I'm not sure if I already posted about this toy project of mine, but I can't find any thread so I make a new one.

A while ago, in a moment of nostalgia I decided to create a little breakout clone, and was kind of proud to have the basics done in two hours, and a first version with graphics in a bit more than a day. Quickest game-like thing ever that I made :D

It thrived for a while, then slept for a while, and lately I decided to publish it open source and polish it a bit:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/brickdoh/

So if there are breakout fans who still would want to try another remake, just go and get it. It's fun :)

Nice to see a source release, but I think I'll pass on breakout.

Did you ever play a breakout where you can send the ball into curves? Well, right into oblivion if you get the spin wrong, but it should be worth a try :P

Brickdoh is a pretty entertaining game. The ball's curving trajectory is an interesting game mechanic.

Two observations:

  • The horizontal movement of the paddle should probably be limited to the game area.
  • In the original break-out, when the ball bounced off the edge (or side) of the paddle it would bounce at a sharper angle than if it hit near the middle of the paddle.

Great job!

Thanks :)

I feel a bit uncertain if it's good or bad that the paddle can move (almost) out of the playfield. It's illogical, but doesn't cause harm, I think, and it allows to hit the ball with the edges even if close to the playfield border. Well, I haven't made up my mind on that point yet :?

Hitting the ball with the outer areas of the paddle should make it bounce more to "that side", but maybe the effect is too small or some bug got into that program part. I'll look into this.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Sounds interesting. I'll try it as a courtesy, but I tend not to like games that don't permit free movement. Can't hardly see myself as a paddle, lol.

Okay, now THAT was very cool Hajo.
Made it to level 3, with a score of 151569.

I've no issue with the paddle moving outside the playing field.

At one point I really had to laugh. The ball came straight down, hit the paddle in the center, went up and made a full 360 degree perfect circle around the last flower in the playing field, then shot up again and hit the last flower (I think those are flowers)

Very interesting mechanics. Makes it damned difficult to play, but it was fun at the same time.

Whee, finally I managed to create a fun game, even if it's only a variation of an older idea :)

Thanks for the feedback, makes me happy to hear!
