The way I see it, if 9/11 didn't cause World War III, nothing is going to cause it.

I think big gigantic all-out country vs country wars are an obsolete concept in the modern world, simply because we're all so inter-connected with each other now.

Worst things that will happen are relatively small-scale proxy wars in areas that are already in turmoil.

That would be true, except Vladimir Putin thinks like a czar. So, all this economic dependence rhetoric is little more than an opportunity for him to take people off guard. Mr. Putin will see Europe dependent, all right... on him for its energy needs. Or else.

You remember the genius conqueror in Bahamut Lagoon? He's THAT guy.

One would hope to think so but I'm not so sure. At this point we should be happy if this will only result in cold war 2.

I hope people are sane enough to prevent another war starting.

People are only as sane as the least sane person in the room, and Putin is most certainly not sane.

The Krim takeover was perfectly timed and executed though. Compared to the riots in the Ukraine it even happened almost without violence.

The USA have been less successful with their invasion in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was bullying. Europe has become basically pacifist and Putin is taking advantage of it.

You Europeans need to make a bee line for the Ukrainian-Russo border. If Russia takes Ukraine your way of life is going bye-bye. Your only chance is to stop Russia with a human shield. Else the entire continent will be mobilized by May.

It really seems that the situation is escalating further. I had hope that it would settle once the Krim belong to Russia. Another war surely will be the most stupid thing we can start. Europe was in ruins twice in the past century, and it doesn't need a third time.

To feed the conspiration theories: For the governments a new war would solve a lot of problems - after the continent is in ruins again, there won't be any debt problems anymore, and economic growth will come natural, since it's easy growing from zero. No more problems to pay old age pensions, health care systems and such, these just don't exist anymore.

Actually I'm less worried about Putin, but about the way of our own governments to react.

Whenever an authoritarian government emerges in a country, it feeds authoritarianism in other countries. This has been the rule throughout history. The superior discipline of a dictatorial power structure requires reciprocal discipline, making even democracies temporarily autocratic. This in turn leads to loss of freedom and stalled social reforms.

If something develops, it'll be in the Sudetenland. Those nations have distinct governments but they will all rally behind Germany if the Russians reach Kiev. Fortunately they are defended by the Carpathian Mountains and it would be difficult for Putin to move beyond them without going through NATO's fortress, Poland. The real problem is the psychological effect of Russian domination in East Europe. There's also the problem that Russia is in an arms race with the United States, which means that it will soon be able to act as easily as the US does militarily.
