First rotation in freezy Quesnel is over, and now after a nail-biting flight (I'm kinda afraid of airplanes a little bit) I'm in freezy Lorette Manitoba... now, you might be wondering why the title of this post is Hallelujah? The computer here has a DSL connection baby yeah! And the computer is much faster too, and we don't have to sign up for net time! Woo!

Still no sound card, though, oh well. I got my cake, I don't need to eat it too :)

Sweet! too bad about the sound card bit though. Glad to hear about the better .net acess. How much $$$ you pulling in? If it's enough, you might want to think about a laptop. Even if it's a used p2 low-ender like 330mhz or something, it's better than nothing :) (I got my p2 330 for 150$ used)

Well, a laptop wouldn't really fit in with the whole Katimavik picture. Essentially my "normal life" is put on hold until August (and I've already changed so much that I don't think I'll even go back to "normal life" when it's over)

erm, i'm confused...what exactly is katamavik? I don't understand how a laptop would go against it...but then again all the field work I've ever done has been coding related.

Heh, what is Katimavik? The answer is infinitely complex. It's basically a program where 11 people ages 17-21 go to three different communities across Canada and do full-time volunteer work placements. But the other major portion of Katimavik is the group living thing; all 11 people and 1 project leader live in the house together all the time. Every week two "house managers" are chosen to do the cooking and most of the cleaning (I've been house manager twice so far). Living expenses are paid for by the program and above that we get 21 dollars a week spending money. Basically the amount of stuff that we do all day, and the emphasis on developing a good group and social skills and such, a laptop really wouldn't fit into the ideals of the program.
