Alright, we've had movies and music... what comes next? Books, of course! Favourites and must-reads, anyone?

Some of my very favourites:
The Wings of the Dove by Henry James.
Red Cavalry Stories by Isaac Babel.
The Sea of Fertility by Yukio Mishima.
Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad.
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

Well? I'm going to the book-store tomorrow and need to know what I should pick up.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Everyone who's into fantasy must read this series!

Two obvious favourites:
The Lord Of The Rings - JRR Tolkien
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy - Douglas Adams

And when I was small (still young), I really liked books by Roald Dahl.

Ya, lord of the rings of course, but then there's my old favorite Mind Games a Tom Swift novel. I read it in one night and wanted more. Why, you ask? It's about a guy who thinks he's actually living an RPG because of an energy surge! Heh, I know you wanna read it now (it's less than 200 pages too)

The Peace War - Virnor Vinge
The Black Company - Glen Cook
Anything by Ken McCleod
The Parafaith War - LE Modesitt

(I would say somthing like 'the sun also rises' or 'Of mice and men' but it seems kind of presumptious, since they were good books, but not my favorites. Besides I've read thousands of novels in my life, I really don't have favorites anymore)

And this php book I just read was pretty good ;P

EDIT: Looks like J.P. has some very refined taste in reading material, he should ignore my list -> Vinge and McCleod are the best, most literary writers in that group. I tried to read a Henry James novel one time but I couldn't endure the one sentence paragraphs that were a half page long.

I perfer "As I Lay Dying" to the sound and the fury (which is far too pop-novel for me). I mean hell, As I Lay Dying has an entire chapter that just says "My Mother was a fish"....now that's cool.

Here's an amazon list of some of my favorites:

it's definately for people who want new and interesting things to read.

Come to think of it, most books by David Eddings, but particularily The Belgariad, are good, although they may seem a bit lightweight to many people.

My favourite would have to be:

Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy
Tad Williams - Otherland
Men are from Mars, Women Are From Venus (a must to keep any sort of sanity in a 'stable' relationship)

Wasn't there a sequel to that? I think I read it once... very confusing, but good.
