Alright, this may be a stupid question, but how does the logging at RPGDX work without cookies and referrer logging? Magic server powers? Is it all done with PHP? If that's the case, if I copied the current address while I was logged in and gave it someone, if that person went to that address, would he be logged in as me? Because that's scary.

Sorry, it's just that there's a whole world wide web out there beyond HTML, and I'm curious about it.

Well, I personally don't know how rpgdx does it, but whenever you visit a site, your machine has to request the html or other files from the machine hosting them. The host machine has to know where to send the files to. So basically, any site you visit CAN get your ip directly if it's set up that way.

But I could be running different accounts at the same time in separate windows, couldn't I? And what about people who's IPs change? Bj[ALT+something; damn it, sorry, can't remember]rn said that his IP changed every two hours or so; does it just chuck him out when that happens?

---- EDIT ----
Bjørn, sorry. Had to run out and copy it from one of your posts in another topic.

If your browser supports cookies, both RPGDX and these forums will use them to store a session ID (created when you first visit after you start your browser) on your computer linked to forums.rpgdx.net for example. When you browser request the next page, it will send the cookie with the request, so the server knows it's you again and as which person you are logged in.

If cookies are not available, things get a little more complicated. The main RPGDX site only supports cookies and logging in there won't work if they're disabled. The forum however still works because it'll append the session ID to every URL, so that when you click to the next page, the session ID will get to the server and again it'll know who you are. In this case however, when you pass the URL to somebody else including the session ID, he might get logged in as you depending on whether this board also takes IP adress into account.

So because me and Modanung are using cookies, we won't get logged out after a temporarily disconnect.

I don't think you can run different acounts at the same time in seperate windows when using cookies, unless you are using two different browsers. When not using cookies, this should be possible with both browser windows carrying along a different session ID.

I hope this clears stuff up. :-)

Hmm... Logging in and then opening another window in Opera still had me logged on; so I started up Explorer, and mosied on down here. When I first got here from Explorer, there was one registered and one guest (me and me), when I logged in from Explorer, there was just one registered (just me), and when I logged out again, again there was one registered, and one guest. So it seems to be pretty good about it. Too bad, I though I could bring RPGDX down in flames (BWA-HA-HA, etc.), or at least see two "Jihgfed Pumpkinhead"s down there in the "users online" section.

Ah, well, thanks. I'll make sure not to cull my URLs when I'm logged-in, and make sure cookies are enabled when on the main page.
