Am I the only one that finds these offensive? I mean I see the humor and everything but is it really necessary?

Yes, when I first got here I thought they were a little gauche, too, but... I don't know, they've somehow acquired something like historical significance (particularly when you've heard the story, "Mandrake and Moira were up late one night...", countless times).

That said I think they are a little off-putting. All in all I guess I'm in favour, but only slightly, of changing them.

I think what might be nice is to have a group name-coming-up-with effort. Should get a nice and eclectic mix of names, then.

actually, i don't think bitch is considered offensive language in this day and age.

Anyone ever read any Footrot Flats comics?

Bah... people and their democracies. :) :). I'll proudly wear my title of pretty, pretty fairy princess until I choose to post enough to become someone's bitch. :)

Make all the bad names go away. What we should have is a ranking system where the first rank is called "1", the second "2", the third "3", and so on... ;P

yeah, that's right, let's tone down the names and make this just like every other board in existance. I don't know- i find them extremely funny, and very unoffensive. But, it's not my board anymore. sigh. Wussies.

or should i say- biyatches? ;)

anyway, i notice everyone seems to complain. If it's not "i don't wanna be someone's bitch", it's "i don't want to be a princess". I myself think princess are fun. Like waterslides.

Um, offensive? I find your use of the word 'offensive' to be offensive. Really, I do. I am vigorously and thoroughly OFFENDED by people who refuse to acknowledge words that belong to their own language, that are found in their own dictionary, that are acknowledged means of communicating thoughts and ideas. That they want to wish those words would go away, that they want to go about throwing away words of their own accord. I find nothing at all humurous about people like you. Really, I don't.

Oh, I see. So, you see the humor, but they are still offensive. You find the little sayings enjoyable (heehee), and yet you are at the same time morally indignant about their existence? Don't you see the inherent contradiction there?

Some people are simply unbelievable.

[edit]
Besides, look at me, I'm a goddam EGG-SUCKING TROLL HUMPER!!! How great is that??? I dunno about you man, I think its pretty great. And I would be proud to be Mandrake's little slap bitch. But, well, I'm already taken on that front.

This is the only board I frequent, so whatever avatar names I find here are going to be original to me. I can understand, though, that if you see the same names everywhere else this would be a relief. Still, I think it shouldn't be hard to come up with other original names. Personally, I really liked the fairy princess ones; they were funny.

Now, ThousandKnives, it's perfectly alright to disagree and even to get a little heated about it, but you're being overzealous and taking your arguments a little farther than I imagine you'd be willing to follow them.

I hope you're not advocating the use of, for example, racial slurs. They are certainly words that belong to our own language, found in our own dictionaries, and they're certainly "acknowledged means of communicating thoughts and ideas", but I think you'd agree that they have no place on a forum of this nature, and I would certainly be offended by their inclusion in the avatar names.b

You're criticizing him for seeing both sides of the issue? Or for being conflicted about his opinions? I don't think it at all inconceivable that a person should find something at once amusing and offensive. Often, with "edgier" humour, the offence is precisely where the humour lies. Or perhaps he's simply softening his criticism a bit with a little concession (you might want to consider that, in future).

My point is that you shouldn't mask a valid point with extremist arguments or personal attacks.

Like I said before, I'm only mildly in favour of a change in avatar names myself, but BigManJones definitely doesn't deserve to get jumped on so soundly for an innocent suggestion.

Jihgfed, I don't know how you do it but every one of your posts seems always to make so much sense.

As for my opinion about the current naming scheme, I think they are funny too but I have been thinking about a replacement system. Where you would choose you class (like "Warrior") and level up at certain post counts (or have people award posts with points, and level up with them). So you would start of as Peasant, become Novice Warrior, up until Warlord or Legendary Scoundrel. Three problems:

- Coming up with the names for each class
- Modifying the forum code for the system
- Getting the green light from the community

And I think the last one could be the most tricky one, seeing as how popular these "rude" titles actually are. :-)

ThousandKnives - If you'll go back and read my post a bit more thoroughly you'll see I didn't say I found them enjoyable, I just said I could see the humor ie I can see how immature people can find such barn-yard humor amusing. if you think thats offensive then my only advice to you is emulate an ostrich and put your head in the sand. But hey 'Live free or die' and all that heh?

Its true that nowadays 'bitch' is a pretty common word; even somewhat acceptable in everyday usage. But my question is; would you use this word with you wife? Why should I have to read it here?

Another consideration could be this; Bjorn has put a tremendous amount of work into this site and it is very professional and well run; something anyone would be proud to put on their resume. Why is there so much traffic through the front page and these people never post in the forums? Could be that the little names give this community a 'fanboy' feel that some people find repulsive?

I like the class and leveling up system Bjorn mentioned. This is an rpg dev formu after all.

My title *should* be "God-Emperor of the Universe; Master of all He Surveys, and Possessor of Inimitable Swagger."

Unfortunately, there's just not enough space. Fortunately, I'm feeling humble today :)

hmm... well I quite often greet my girlfriend with "Yo biyatch!!"
the reason I get away with it could be either
a) we both know the humour in it and laugh at it
b) im drunk
c) both

just pick one...
