PostPosted: Mon Jun 23, 2003 9:44 pm    Post subject: Ashes. Indie, yet 3d. [quote]

An attempt to mix oldschool gaming with opengl technology. I am coding an rpg game based on my personal 3d engine, which allows for simple graphics - but an unlimited and seamless world (ah, sweet tiles).

Featuring: NPCs with schedules, running their own lives (a là Ultima 7), night/day cycle, seamless huge (even too much) 3d world. There will be no editor or explicit documentation of the file formats, but everything is going to be extremely obvious, most of the files being human readable text.

The main key feature of the game, anyhow, resides in a silly yet brilliant idea: you'll create your own party (like in the old TSR games), yet each character will be... characterized and "alive", not just a combination of race-class-stats.

Major pain in the ass (and other important parts of my body): the fact that I totally miss 3d and 2d artists, thus I am doing all the work by myself, in my little spare time - with the pitiful results one could expect from a guy that opened 3d studio max for the first time one month ago.

A triplet of early screenshots follows.
Forgive my broken english,

Andrea

Well, thank you very much Mandrake! But the problem is that I will really never finish if I have to do all the work by myself. I mean... I am very proud to be "a team of one", but also very lonely and tired ;)

2d pixel artists! Where are you?
3d model makers! Where do you hide?

Wow cool. Some day I'm going to get into 3D modeling/skinning stuff. But right now unfortunately I'm just a pixel art monkey.

Ah, a 2d pixel artist would be enough for poor mr. me, after all most of the maps are just a square. There's no particular skinning technique or complex uvw map over the models.

Will the maps have heightmaps?

I'm kind of into modelling a bit, but I'm supposed to be working on two other projects already.
I could help you though.

Yes, the engine already has heightmaps, but currently I don't plan using them for a number of reasons. Don't worry, if you're already working on other prorjects... I appreciate the offer, yet I don't want to overload anyone. I am the first to know how hard is to accomplish the work that should be splitted among two or three guys...

Yep, the unmodified actual - and early, let me say - screenshots. The soft look is all thanks to my lazyness: no opengl lights is definitely easier than managing them ;) (the engine has a lighting subsystem, actually, but everyone complained that it looks better without any light!)
