Which rpg holds the record of the largest world?

Ultima 6 was huge. I could really feel the "oh oh - I am lost" feeling.

Ultima 7 was huge as well, but I never felt really lost, although I still discover places I've never been to, after I played it lots of times, during something like ten years.

Heh, I think size doesn't matter that much, more more the amount of detail in it. The largest world record is certainly held by an early walkaround demo of Anestor featuring infinite grassland! :-)

As of large detailed worlds, I think Morrowind comes a long way. Been playing the game for quite some time and still haven't explored even 1/4 of the map area, and it's all hand made and pretty detailed. Then again, I've never experienced the immense Ultima world, though I have played Ultima IX but does that one count? I think Morrowind is bigger than Ultima IX.

Anything is bigger than Ultima IX. No, really.
Daggerfall was quite large but now that you mention morrowind... Arena! The very first chapter of the Elders Scroll Saga, was incredibly huge. Repetitive, boring, but huge.

An RPG with enormus world would be great so long as there are faster ways of transport except feet. You could make a great futuristic game with that.
Having only your feet at the start you could never cross the desert, you'd starve, so you'll need a bike/plane of some sort... you'll get the idea.

I'd say that Dungeon Siege (if that would qualify as an RPG) has got the largest world. When I tried it out, it was something like this:

Some tonwsperson: "Go to cave X and kill bad guy Y and you'll get magic item Z"
I start walking towards the aforementioned cave. At the outskirts of the village, I see a sign: "5 miles to cave X"
I walk for 15 minutes or so, when I stumble upon a new sign: "4.8 miles to cave X"

Needless to say, I didn't get halfway to cave X.

Dude... Daggerfall was BY FAR the largest. Like I mentioned before, it took (In real life!) a week to cross the world, corner to corner.

Wait wait, I was - infact - meaning the largest hand-crafted world. There's no limit to what randomness can do! :)

The first and the second part of The Elder Scrolls weren't made by hand, but generated randomly by computer...but the third part, Morrowind, is hand made, so I think this one could count as one of the biggest RPGs, but not part 1 or 2

Ok, I got to know that Ultima VII's world totalled a size of
24,576 x 24,576 pixels ...
At the resolution of 320x200 this meant 76 x 122 screens,
9272 screens in total. Not bad! Now I understand why I often felt lost, and I keep finding locations I never saw before, after ten years.

So hmm, let me see: I am aiming for 1024x1024 tiles, each one sized 48x48 opengl units... each screen renders more or less (depending on the camera angle) 4x5 tiles. So it should be 256x 204 screens = 52224 screens.

Ok, there's room for that "I am lost" feeling I think :)

Maybe, if you mean generated randomly them saved as a permanent map, but if you mean randomly generated ala diablo, then no. Daggerfall was NOT random each time you played.

I remember playing the MMORPG Anarchy Online. Theres something to be said about a big world size. I found it incredibly frustrating at the best of times, it would take you the better part of 30 minutes to walk from town to town. And yeah, you could buy vehicles. But with the lowest end vehicle costing like $10,000,000 and requiring a ridiculous amount of 'vehicle' skill to actually drive, it would take the player the better part of 6-12 months playing to actually purchase. Sure there were portals set up, but they didn't take you everywhere you needed to go, and I remember getting myself completely lost more than a couple of times. It was by no means the largest RPG world out there, but could be incredibly frustrating due to its size.

I really enjoy that huge areas can make you keep guessing at what you're going to find next. They're so much more fufilling when the developers actually do hide secrets in them.
