GwGF: Geeks with GirlFriends

heh, I'm kind of new to this whole world, and now that it looks like I'll be living with the girl in question so I thought I'd ask some advice. How does the geek lifestyle mesh with a relationship? Does it turn her off when you stay up late tracking down a bug in your program, does programming interfere with the time you spend together? What kind of sacrifices do you have to make? Any advice would be good, 'cause I'm sort of freakin' out here :)

Heh... nope... it doesn't bug my wife in the least. Just remember, your geeky pursuits should be secondary to her... spend time with 'er, and have fun... then do your geeky things. As long as she doesn't feel like you're neglecting her, she won't mind, trust me. :)

Agrees with DarkDread...I've been together (and living together) with a girl for over 5 years, but some month ago we split-up. So, do the stuff u like to do and let her do the stuff she likes to do...then you can do *that* stuff you both wanna do too ;)

Congrats! May you have many, geeky, canadian babies. Or if children are too much responsibility, may you have lots of hot horny canadian sex but without any "accidents".

Geek or no geek, the problems will arise in any relationship are roughly the same. I'll explain in a bit. When I met my wife I wasn't coding, I was a writer by trade. And we still face the same sort of problems now I did then.

No, it shouldn't offend her, unless you are not spending alot of time with her or ignoring her. This is most important in the first year living together. This is when most problems will appear. Just make sure you have even time devoted to her and to coding, and make sure you have two computers both internet ready. Cause computer sharing can be a complete and total bitch. And make sure she gets the faster one.

Alot. Your no longer living alone. You have to get used to a new lifestyle, a new way of living. Even if your were living with your foplks before, it's not the same as in a relationship. You will be always around each other, sharing a bed, a room, a place, etc.

BTW, did you get my last PM? Do you have MSN IM? Email me....

That's the thing, she knows about my geeky side but because we're in Katimavik she hasn't had the chance to fully experience the full geekiness of me yet. (just occured to me that could be a weird sexual metaphor)

Then again, I have noticed that she has an unusually fast typing speed for a non-geek. Perhaps she has a geeky side that she hasn't shown me yet. :)

Thanks for the advice, guys!

But just one more thing, does the fact that I have GF immediately disqualify me from the geek classification?

Yes, unless you make a FF reference
