I just started using Trillian, and I must say it is supersleek. It combines all your IM clients into one: but you get to use all your old accounts, and import all your old contact lists. Plus, it supports IRC.
I'm just really impressed with it so far, and thought I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't heard of it. It's freeware, and you can find it at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/trillian/index.html.
Oh, as an aside, since I've got this now and it'll automatically do all the bothersome work for me, I'll now be around at irc.esper.net #rpgdx (I don't know the proper notation for IRC channels, sorry). So no more complaining about how empty it is.

You got to pay money if you want to browse a website together with your friends, and some other useless stuff. :-)
As for Messaging, I use Jabber, it's an open instant messaging protocol with many different clients. I like the Psi client the most. When you use Jabber, you can use most other messaging protocols through gateways, that's how I am online on ICQ and MSN.
Only because Jabber is fairly new, things like audio, video and file streams are not standardized yet and thus not supported by many (if any) clients.
Edit: I just learned that Jabber support was added to Trillian just 2 weeks ago. So I might still try this Trillian out. :-)

I checked out Trillian, but only the Pro version supports Jabber and that one is not free. Currently, I've moved to Rhymbox, a Jabber client for Windows which is nicer than Psi in several ways.
Ok, and I was wrong about the file transfer part, it has been nearly finalized and Rhymbox already supports file transfers. Though not to external networks and of course only to Jabber clients that support it too.

Well, I've no idea about any of the other clients, so I'm not recommending Trillian over any of these. It serves my purposes, though, so I do recommend it (or any of the others) to anyone who ever finds he has more than one chat client going at a time.
