Well... After seeing filmed demo/engine test clips from both upcoming games, I'm leaning towards HL2. You would too if you saw that test video. In the beginning it shows this cave-like area, and then this patch of ground swells up and starts steaming right before you- This entire patch of ground just puffs right there- It's amazing- Also, they were talking about how the enviroments were destructible... It showed this old wooden rack of some sort that that player was shooting, and each time a bullet hit the wood would splinter and fly off JUST like it would in real life- Same with this rusty metal ledge, it bent and crumpled from the force. But the coolest thing I saw had to be the Gravitation Gun (I'm not about the real name for it). The idea is that you can pick up any metal object and then shoot it at your enemies- In this one spot near the end the player grabbed an 'F' from a neon sign and launched it at this giant spider- Which brings me to the monsters.
Wow. There's these alien helicopter-things, look kinda like a flying mutated whale. And then there's the go cart chase- In which the player got into a go cart and an abandoned track and drove around shooting down this flying whale thing in the process-- I SWEAR, that clip looked filmed... Well, almost- But HL2 doesn't use FMVs. Also, another place worthy of note is when a baby headcrab leaped up and knocked a security camera off it's mount- Then the player grabbed it with the Gravitation Gun and moved it around, and whatever it 'saw' was displayed on this huge screen. And don't get me STARTED on the fire effects... I'm drowning in my drool here.
On to Doom3, I think it has a SLIGHT advantage over HL2 graphic-wise, and it certainly shines with it's realtime shadow engine. For example, one place in the demo video, there was a dark hallway with only a swinging lamp casting a dim light on the floor, and an Imp was crawling down the hall- And whenever the light swung over the imp the light/shadows would move and travel over the contours of the Imp's body in a PERFECT manner. True, D3's got the atmosphere and graphics, but HL2's got the revolutionary physics system and just plain sweet looking puzzles, like when you have to shoot a ledge with barrels on it to drop them, so they float in the water so you can cross... The water looks so frickin' amazing, you'd have to see it for yourself... Go get the HL2 demo movie off Kazaa.
Now.

Half-life 2 looks like it definitely has the superior gameplay mechanics and physics engine going for it, and about the only thing Doom 3 has is its cool shadow effects.

But for me it's a moot point because either game will probably run at about 3 FPS on my computer unless I disable said cool effects :)

Well I'm not saying Doom3 won't be worth playing. I'd certainly buy both if I had the cash. They'd probably both run at a decent speed on my computer... Oh, wait... 1.7 ghz and 256 RAM is very outdated all of a sudden, isn't it? Well, it is obsolete the moment you buy it...

You'll at least (probably) be able to run Doom 3 on that, provided that your video card isn't teh suck. I got the alpha running at a playable FPS with the highest gfx quality settings on a 2200+/512MB/Gf4Ti4200.

The thing that gets me about the HL2 video is how much they show off the physics. Since HL2 uses the havoc physics engine they are getting alot of praise for someting they didin't build. But they did add in the 'gravatron gun' which fills in what i wanted to see in games using havoc, the ability to pick stuff up.

Doom 3 will look better, i think thats a given, but i won't be able to tell the difference.

What i think is the groovyest thing about HL2 is that it was built from HL1 which in turn was built from Quake 1.

Same physics engine :D

May Payne 2 was short. But Max 1 was too long so i won't complain.

The HL engine is a modified Q2 engine.

Actually, it is built from quake 1. Many people think it's built from q2, just because the graphics are so good (in comparison to q1)-- But the HL engine is indeed a heavily modified quake engine.

After reading:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/review/R61497.html
http://www.planethalflife.com/features/interviews/harryint.shtm
http://www.gamersdepot.com/games/rev-game-half-life.htm
http://www.phdweb.force9.co.uk/index2.html

I can only conclude that we are both wrong.

The interview from planethalflife is the most intresting because it quite clearly state that they had both the Q1 and Q2 engine licensed and therefore just took whatever parts they liked from both so actually it runs a hybrid engine.

Or you could say we're both right.
And wrong.
Interesting, though...
Kind of a patchwork engine.

I'll be getting both, assuming I can ever get my new spiffy ass computer running. Still dunno whats wrong with that thing. And then theres Deus Ex 2. I liked Deus Ex more than half life or doom. Hopefully the sequel doesnt throw it in the crapper. The main character definitely looks like a dumbass. Not as cool as JC Denton.

Whatever I heard It is almost the same gamelenght on them both?

Max 2 is definately shorter than max 1... Hmm, crazy research at ign gives them at the same length. But i think youll find that max 2 is indeed shorter than max 1 i was getting sick of max 1 before i finished it but i played max 2 to the finish with no complaints. I don't think it was a story problem, the levels were just too damned huge.

But i supose everyone wants, more bigger and longer nowdays. Not the concise goodness like max 2.

MP1 too long? I finished it in 10 hours or so...way too short!
