Would anybody else be interested in doing another compitition in April?

We've had the winter themed compo, I personally think a similar spring themed compitition could be a lot of fun - spring invokes a lot of interesting themes, like hope, change... and so on. Instead of the whole month of december, we could take the whole month of april.

What do you all think?

Sounds like a smashing idea! I'm totally up for another compo.

Excellent! That's the proposition seconded! Should we start specifying the rules? Restictions and so forth?

Oh man, I'd love to be able to do this one. I have to start finishing (weird choice of words) the books I've started.

(wow... bad sentence)

Anyway, I'm reading:
Game Programming: Tricks of the Trade
Game Scripting Mastery
OpenGL Game Programming

They're all necessary, really, for me to finish a windows game. I've vowed never to take on a project in QB ever again.

Liar!

I haven't read a one, and made quite a few windows games.

mmm.. I'm really sorry to say this, but I feel that is a rude thing to say to Ninkasu. Its not like Ninkazu said "these books are necessary for all people to finish a game". How do you know they aren't necessary for him to finish a game?

I think a good book can often can help people get a good solid understanding in a given subject. Personally I try to get information from whereever I can... be it book, website, or just by missing around with some ideas. Learning is part of the fun of making games. Anyway, I think this getting dangerously off-topic.

I would like to enter this contest... but I feel too depressed about failing at the last contest to provide even the simplest demo. So I think I'll wait until I get my engine all up to stratch before I enter anymore contests.

Well, the contest wouldn't be until a month and a half. It's not like you need to have a rhytm based ATB battle system and an OpenGL generated walkabout system - a simple straight forward top down FF style RPG would do just as well - or something else?

Since nobody has suggested a style, yet, I think I will -

Has everyone played Final Fantasy VIII yet? It's quite old at this stage, so I assume so. It tried it's hand and a severly flawed, but in a lot a ways, quite clever junction based battle system. Every indie RPG seems to use the Snes square battle systems, which really is no less original than using a later square battle system. So how about it? A straightforward, top down RPG, but using either the materia, junction, or sphere grid battle systems?

Oh, and one more thing... if you want to bicker, please use the PM system. I, for one, don't want to hear it.

heh white_door- i was just kidding. trying to make a point that learning windows programming is not necassarily found in books...the lair part, well, I was just kidding. he can learn it anyway he pleases....

either way- i like using my own combat system which looks nothing like phantasy star, dragon warrior, or final fantasy (any of them)....the closest is BOF or Suikeden, but that's still not very close. You'll see when I post some screenies of the changeline combat system.

Yeah, a new competition is a nice idea. I don't really have any ideas about the Spring theme yet though. Also, in what way would be restrict the theme of the competition this time? Last time we had a few strict constraints to make sure the game got into the winter theme, and to give participants a bit of inspiration. Any ideas on that now?

I don't really like the idea of restricting the style of combat, because it stands in the way of creativity and will decrease interest for those who don't like the chosen combat system.

...What, because it's "outdated"?
Because it's not a "real" programming language?
It shouldn't matter what it's made it, as long as it's a fun experience.
Hell, Worlds Beyond is done in Game Maker, and I know a lot of people frown on that.
And those lot of people probably won't play it.
So screw them, if they want to miss out, so be it.
But yeah, I think a spring compo would be awesome, even if I don't enter.
More games to play. ;)

I'm never doing a QB game again either. Basically because I discovered the Allegro library and fell madly in love with it :)

Or it could be because there is no reason not to use the best available methods at hand to create your game if you take pride in it.

well not only that, but it's also restricting your target audiance. With the advent of WinXP and the dropping of most DOS support, alot fo QB games will not run in windows. OTOH, if you use allegro, SDL and C/C++ you can have your game run on multiple platforms.

That, and QB, as far as languages go, is an inelegent jumble.
