before there were some of you who offered to help if i decided to make a 3d remake of sd3... well, im not a huge fan of sd3, but, i am interrested in makeing what you could call an indie tim-burton-ized 3d remake of SOM. this is defanetly something i could never handle on my own, but it could use a lot of community help to rip graphics/sprites/animations

Sounds cool, you better watch out for elementary school minded people like Mandrake though. He will report you to Square-Enix as soon as you attempt it.

I'm with you on the engine side, but will hardly be able to help out with the content. Sounds cool, though I would prefer a game in the same style which is not exactly the same.

That elementary school kid does at least know the differance between fanart and blatlant copying. And most copyright holders are also much more tolerant to the former but somehow seem to disslike the later quite much. _________________ If there's life after death there is no death, if there's no death we never live. | ENTP

Heh, I have no problem with someone pointing out their distaste in my choice of a project, it's the fact that he had to act like the kid everyone hated who always goes "IM TELLING!!!" and runs off to the nearest authority figure. Really pathetic...

The way I saw it, he simply and politely notfied square-enix of your project, and calmly told you of his doing so. Personally I don't think square will care, so good luck with your project. ;)
Oh, and syn9, are you recreating the entire Sd3 game, or just a game with it's graphics? Because Sd3 had an insane amount of different choices to make, what with the multiple characters and companion system... Don't let me shoot you down, though, heh.

He's recreating Secret of Mana, not SD3.

I'd much rather see something original... even if it uses some textures lifted from aforementioned game. And seeing how well your scene rendering research is paying off, I believe you can create some fantastic work with it.

No, what's really pathetic are lamer newbies who need to completely rip off other people's hard work just to feel all big inside. Do what the rest of us did, spend 5 years learning how to sprite artwork, or hire an artist. You will enjoy it and feel much better about yourself.
Syn9-
Tim burtonized? Then why rip? I would think a 3d edward gorey style game would be amazing, unique, and very stylized. Then again, I'm a little cry baby, boohoohoo, who beleives that people's hard work should be recognised, and not stolen. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

i was contemplating this a bit at work today, and yes, i wanted to make a clone of secret of mana. clone being, all dialog, the general layouts of maps, story / spells / weapons / attacks etc... with original artwork/modified environments with some added original artwork... bout 25% of the original tiles would be preserved, the rest altered....
but alas... theres the whole, copywrite issue, the onlyway i'd be able to do it would be to complete my current game, then approach SE with the idea, and sign a liscense for the use of copywritten materials... that would probably be the easiest way to get maps of all the areas and a detailed walkthrough, instead of taking the time to do it all by hand...
though, seeing as how the material is copywritten, i couldnt just give the game away for free, because then they wouldnt make any money off it, or i could give it for free and pay a lump sum for the lisense... i have no clue... i'll have to talk to them once i have something to show for myself, heh
admins: you might want to lock the thread, heh, its travelled pretty far off topic >)

I doubt theyd be interested in you remaking the game. Whenever people send in emails asking for approval of a remake they tend to get shut down. See Peroxide's "Ultima Reborn" project. They have an engine comparable to Morrowind's and were told to discontinue. So now they're using their engine for an original game called Era.
I've played the SOM games many times and don't really see the point in playing through it again in 3D. Id much rather see this engine used for something original. And if you need help with original textures and such I could possibly help out.

Well... look at Zelda Classic by Armageddon Games. It's been released for years now and they (so far as I know) haven't had any trouble from Nintendo. As well, it's pretty popular too and so I find it hard to believe that somebody from Nintendo hasn't seen it yet. Zelda Classic is a pretty much perfect remake of the original NES version of Zelda with extras (such as a quest editor).
So, basically, what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't be *too* worried about anybody trying to bust you for making a remake of SD3. As long as you don't try to make money off of it anyway. ;) _________________ RPG-Dev.net

Just something to think about metroidclassic was about remaking metriod for the PC in much the same way as Zelda Classic, that site got a cease and disist (so now he's making a 2D scrolling game toolkit that could be used to make something like metroid although he take no responsibility for anyone doing something like that)
So although one shouldn't worry to much not thinking about the legal aspects either is quite silly. _________________ If there's life after death there is no death, if there's no death we never live. | ENTP
