I dunno.
Even though it was pretty badly written, I enjoyed for some reason.
Maybe it's because I enjoy hearing pretty much anything about that brand of old school rpgs.

it's not that I don't care- persay, it's just that I have writer's goggles on when I first finish anything of writing importance (ie: "it has to be great! lookie what I did!"). After re-reading it, it is a terrible, terrible article, that had some really good promise.
Which is why I'm teaching myself never to post first drafts in an open forum. No matter how enamored I am with the writing. Currently re-writing it....giving it a better layout. Colours suck, eh bjorn? Thanks for telling me that- they were the colours I planned on using for my new web page for Urizen Games- better to find out from an article than someone visiting the site for the first time, eh?
Also- I am writing a much more detailed article on world creation. Kind of like the one I had for the original RPGDX- but longer and more detailed. Sorry about the scatter brained article on RPG memories- this one I'm working on now is more refined and polished. Probably going to do a few drafts before posting it here...might PM Happy and LeoDraco about it to hear them bitch about what I did wrong though. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

I didn't like the colors, yeah. :-)
Good to know you're not easily put off your goal from a bit of bashing, and I'm looking forward to your future article releases.

Gotta say, Mandrake, I agree with Bjørn on his latest point. Considering the ribbing you took over the grammar, layout, and color choices, you're certainly taking it in stride.
Sure, your article could use some improvement - but then, so could the manners of some people on this board. I think you're taking a great approach to this - learning from the constructive parts of the criticism and moving on. Next time, you'll spend the time to polish your articles a bit, which will make them better and silence your detractors.
Whatever you do, don't let harsh comments keep you from writing. Despite its flaws, I enjoyed reading it, especially your experiences with U3 and U4 on the console. Having played them on an old Apple //e, I never realized they released the Ultima games on consoles, and was pretty interested to hear about the interface difficulties between the two. My memory of Ultima 4 was much more favorable than yours, apparently, and it sounds like the main difference is interface. Having a keyboard made all the difference, and trying to shoehorn a PC game onto a console sapped the game of its value beyond the simple matter of control. That's the sort of thing us hobbyist RPG developers should be keeping an eye on - if that's not a lesson in the importance of interface design, I don't know what is.
I do have one criticism, and I don't know if it's just an HTML thing or what. All the screenshots appeared jumbled up at the top of the article for me. I would have liked them interspersed in the text where you discuss the different games. Some of the games you mentioned are ones I haven't played, so I could not distinguish the different screenshots when I would have liked to. This should be a simple matter to fix.
Keep up the writing, and don't get discouraged.

heh don't worry-i'm taking it all in stride. Well except for Happy, and I just like telling him to go fuck a sump from time to time. It just tickles my donkey.
Anyway- enough bizarre profanities about Happy...Thanks for the positive feedback. Yeah, U4 (as I found out later after dloading the PC version, and hence has become the greatest game in the world IMHO) on the NES just wasn't as much fun as U3 on the nes. I really think this has to do with basic interface issues.
Working on the new article still- and the screenshots are no longer a jumbled mess at the top of the page. I'll probably end up posting intermediary(sp?) drafts here so people can pick at it before I release a final version.
But of course, the article is on hold right now. Mainly because the demo of the changeling is very late...
work work work. I wish I could make games full time, sigh. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-
