Yeah Autumn up north in the states is nice. Falling leaves, temp drops but not too much. Horror movie film festivals. It’s Winter I find depressing.

I’m definitely in. I would suggest probably Mid-Octoberish for the compo, give people time to create some sort of engine to be used and to get an idea of what they might do.

interesting autumn makes people feel sad. makes me think of cute girls... wearing long sleeve shirts where the sleeves droop and partially cover hands, only fingers peeking out... little noses blushed from cool weather... smell of leaves. autumn is so cuddly.

mmk bye.
Thats a nice thought, but I likem' more when they are dressed in bikinis and sun lotion :).
Anyway, it's great to see that so many are interested.

my entry. When is the start date and deadline?

Also, can I take the time to create my engine from now til the starting date? .. Oh, and what are the final restriction decisions?

Well, Mid-october seems to be a good time to start the contest. I think that it is quite alright if you start to work with the engine at any time you like.

Only a weekend feels like it is a bit to short on the contest. It will only end up with a one week extension or something. I could bet on that ;). I think that we should go with a one week contest. My thoughts...
Anyhow, I wonder, what should the contest be called?Bjørn, you are usually good to come up with names. Have any ideas?

I think the weeklong will have less completions. Mebe people can only sucessfully schedule 2 days work :P. If it's like the other RPGDX comps you'll prolly get an extra day anyway.

Because it's "Persephone".

Although I don't see a problem with using "Persephone" as a name for the contest, Persephone wasn't, and isn't, associated with autumn. She is associated with the cycle of seasons. When she's in Hades with Hades (heh) it's winter, and when she's up walking the earth it's spring and such.

See, early greeks didn't reconize autumn as a season. They only had three; summer, winter, and spring. But later on it was added in and I think Carpo was then the god that autumn was associated with.

But I'm not real sure, in doing a quick search I find that the first generation of Horae was Thallo, Auxo, and Carpo. But even then she's associated with autumn, so I'm most likely wrong on when she was introduced.

Actually I was thinking more of Persephone as the general contest name for all the contests, since they are each based on seasons. Sorry, should’ve explained that in my earlier post. On the topic of the Gods/Godesses the concept and story of Persephone (and the lack of autumn in the story) might be a regional story, the same with the Gods/Goddesses you mentioned (Horae was Thallo, Auxo, and Carpo). Auxo could be a “minor” deity to a smaller greek city and not as widely worshipped or accepted.

But I could be blowing it all out of my ass too, since the last time I had studied Greek mythology was ages ago.

EDIT:
Upon doing some research real quick (Bullfinch's), I found that neither generation of Horae have an Autumn.

a few quick questions,

do the graphics have to be drawn during the contest?

does the story have to be yours? (like can I use some bits of books, and such? if not this is okay, I'll write the story if need be)

and also, what are the final restrictions / rules?

thanks,

If you like autumn, you should move to Denmark, because here it last from September to April :(

Would anybody have any serious objections to holding this contest next weekend (18th - 19th)? I know it's short notice, but anything after that isn't really convient for me, and I really want to enter.

P.S. Very definitly count me in :)

Sorry, I'm away that whole weekend so no MiniRPG party at that time... on exception, you might want to create your entry then, but I guess that won't be as fun, heh. Also, I really think it's on too short notice. Mandrake suggested halfway October, and I agree with doing it in a weekend around that time.

About the name, as there really doesn't seem to be a god or goddess for Autumn, I'm not sure.

> open suggestion box
The suggestion box is now open.

Suggestions for upcoming contest name go in there. May the best suggestion prevail. The full name of the contest: RPGDX Autumn 2004 MiniRPG competition.

Now about the definate rules. Some things are certain:

  • You create all content of your game within the timespan of the contest, which is 2 days. One day extention isn't a given, but participants should be prepared for it nonetheless. It's probably best not to expect it though. Content is: graphics, music, dialogue and environments.
  • Note that the previous didn't include story, you can figure that out in advance. Preferably think up your own, but you're free to base it on something existing. It also doesn't include the engine, which can be prepared in advance too. You are advised to make use of these opportunities.
  • Environment requirement: Needs to look like autumn.
  • Technical requirement: Leaves falling from trees. Technical bonus for having interaction between characters and the leaves falling or on the ground.

Especially because of the short timespan, a low resolution is advised, but there are no requirements there. One unspoken requirement is still that you should create an RPG game, or MiniRPG in this case.

I welcome any additional questions/suggestions.

I am so in on this one...I got VC installed on this comp (finally...had to reinstall the OS though) so I can keep working on my generic RPG engine. Happy convinced me to take up tracking again so I should be well within practice by the time this hits. So look out y'all...I'm competing this time. :D </egotrip> *sadistic laugh* *silence* oh shit, rocks flying at my head again...! *b0nk*

Umm...sorry if this post sounds cocky or anything...I'm just psyched as hell to be able to finally compete in an rpgdx compo. :D Forgive me already! :)

THE FOUR HORAI were the goddesses of the seasons - Spring (Eiar), Summer (Theros), Autumn (Phthinoporon) and Winter (Kheimon). They were daughters of the sun-god Helios, who guided their father's path across the heavens and presided over the flowering and fruiting of the earth. These Horai were also called attendants of Hera.

I guess that would mean that Phthinoporon would be accurate for the name...heheh.. try saying that word ten times..it will freak you out. Hell, just try saying it once aloud!!

Ah well, Bjorn: I really want to enter into this contest, so I'm going to leave the forums for about a week to get an engine done that I can use. :\

hrm..goodnight guys, I'll be back in a week...hopefully with a brand-spanking new engine that can compete in this contest.
..I wish that my niece hadnt gotten to my backup cds........ :\

Phthinoporon, Phthinoporon, Phthinoporon, Phthinoporon, Phthinoporon... how the heck do you pronounce that? You guys seems to know a bit to much about old greek gods and such...creepy.
