Yeah, I noticed this too. General Discussion has about a 3-second lag before loading, while the lesser-populated forums pop up pretty much instantly.
Probably has something to do with the database accessing. Maybe adding an index or something can help (warning: I got a barely passing grade in my database course, so I only halfway know what I'm talking about)

That's a good point. I am, however, presuming that some portion of phpBB's software already does something like that. Course, indices are still (relatively) useless, should a set of posts all be stored on different harddrive pages. And, obviously, the sort order of the posts (on disk) being on some field different than how they are normally accessed.

I'm assuming indices on existing phpBB tables are fine, most of them are probably indexed on their ID. I'll gladly leave any optimization in this department to the phpBB authors.
