The tendency is for women and men of the same or similar type to find one another only moderately attractive. Considering the maternal instincts of females, it is more likely for the female to venture into a less concentrated "typed" work environment than a male, who will gravitate to his optimal work environment on a basis of personal satisfaction and look to the world at large for his mate.

And, highly intuitive introverts tend not to work that well with other intuitive introverts of the opposite sex. Although the attraction is there, it is discomforting and fragile.... That's not to say that all programmers are introverts, however the trend is documented towards the introverted in the higher echeleons of the field, in particular. The ability to stand apart from the crowd and join at one's own convenience pays off. (although I'm sure Mandrake is none too pleased by it ;)

Although there are several artists frequenting the board also, they tend to remain in the shadows.... There may be a woman or two among them. Now there is a young woman I know who has a link to RPGDX on her Livejournal bio, but I can't say if she actually visits. (I was a jerk and well, ;)

So is that why i find 7 of 9 hot?

The thing is, once you single yourself out as being different you are going to be treated differently. Weather you do it by making good games or saying "I'm a chick." Once you do that you are going to get attention, good and bad.

If it was never made known that MystDragon was female we would have all assumed that she's another nobody who probably won't finish their game. But now shes a somebody who probably won't finish their game, but she's a chick, like wow man.

Hi, MystDragon (et al)! :) Thought I'd pop in here and make my female presence known. I'm Mandrake's wife, and browse the boards---and work on games---on occasion, although my time for both is rather limited these days, due to the baby. I'm actually a pixel artist, not a programmer; I figure that I married Mandrake for a reason, and that reason was that I wouldn't have to learn how to program. (Oh, yeah...and that whole 'love' thing, too...pffft.) ;)

I am an avid gamer, both video games and tabletop RPGs. I am SO addicted to FF9 right now; Mandrake wasn't kidding! He practically has to pry the controller out of my hands in order to get a turn, heh. Most of my female friends are the same way; most of them channel their creativity into writing/illustrating comics and novels as opposed to making games, though.

Anyway, I thought another chick should respond to you, rather than lots of guys telling you that you're not alone...or telling you that you are, judging from what I could understand from some of those posts. ;)

Cheers!!

M.

My fiance, Scorpio9 doesn't have too much time to get online and browse/post on the forums, though I am teaching her how to program, her real talent lies in her artwork. ~her art is not suited for games, but it's beautiful nonetheless. :)

So far I've taught her the basics of programming logic, and she has written a few really interesting programs. ~ I'm so proud of her.

She's sleeping right now, so she can't post herself, though I'll try to get her to visit sometime ~ most likely on the weekend.

Just to put my two cents in, on the qbasicnews forums there are 3 females:

Rhiannon
Meg
Amanda

All three are programmers. ;)

In the company that I work for we have ~8% female software designers/developers/architects.

At the university we had 13% female students in computer science.

But on the internet you never know.

Wow.
This thread caused a lot of people to reply.
At least now I know I'm not all that strange, being a female programmer and all that.

Indeed.

So, do you have any projects that you're working on?

Yes, I'm currently working with Darcnyss on a 3D RPG called Slayer: The dark prophecy.

Oooh, a java rpg and 3d too! So what api are you using? Java3d, lwjgl, jogl? Are you using one of the 3d engines around like xith or jMe (jmonkeyengine)?

Hey, You!
well yes and no. What I'm saying is treat her with the same respect as everyone else, not point out and single out the fact that she's a girl.

Yes, but she started a thread titled 'am I the only girl here?' didn't she.

And about allegro.cc; you have to admit there were alot of regulars with dual accounts that were posing as females.

RPG fans like to play roles, don't they :)

You can't really play the role of a woman in real life without a lot of hassle and potential problems - some do, but they are only few. But the internet is a perfect playground for this kind of game.

That's why wrote in my last message: "On the internet you never know".

I've seen the same thing happen on several forums, but I can assure you she's real, and completely female, considering the fact that she's sitting right next to me on the network.
Also, since she's my girlfriend I should know if she's female or not.
