Heh, the screenshot reminds me a lot of putting a ship together in Ascendency, loved that game.
I'm not sure what you're trying to do with controls though.

Something like a "futuristic" tank (bottom of that page) might be appropriate: something that's 3D (in appearance), and shows stars/planets. Although, that doesn't really mesh well with those images you have there. (Which, oddly enough, remind me of Master of Orion 3.) _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

I've never played MOO3, but I've played Ascension. So Björns guess that the images are inspired by Ascension is right ;)
They are original creations though. I've written the scene files rendered them with PovRay, and if you find them in other games, someone took them without telling me.
The "tank" idea is good. I came across it in quite some sci-fi novels, and I think it's worth a try. Thank you for the suggestion :-) !

The screenshots here should pretty much get the idea across. (Specifically, this and this. This could also be thrown in for good measure.) Heh. Course, there really aren't that many ways to actually go about displaying star-system/galactic information, so similarities aren't terribly surprising.

It seems to be a common theme across the genre, especially relatively newer works. The Lost in Space movie, for example, had a really neat 3D tank, while Sphere, if I remember correctly, had a tank a little more advanced than present day technology.
Holographic imagry is, if nothing else, one of the more efficient ways of visualizing 3D positional data. Sorts of tanks were even used in some of the Star Wars movies, for showing the Death Star. (And, apparently also in Star Trek.)
Dependent upon how graphic you want to take this idea, you could also have a sort of spike map for showing planet terrain. (I cannot actually find the technical name for such a thing. If you have played Riven, on one of the islands, there is a sort of array of spikes which displayed the terrain on a given grid on a map.) _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

I see. In my former reply I was referring to the machinery images.
The galactic and system map were also inspired by a game, but you'll have to dig a long time back, erm, 12 years ago, or even some more :)
I must admit, I'm better in collecting existing good ideas than to create genuinely new ideas. E.g. the research topic is something for that I don't have existing examples to use, and I'm already stuck with the most basic steps:
http://forums.rpgdx.net/viewtopic.php?t=1170
The planet surfaces will most likely be available in two variants. There will be an overview map, showing the entire planet with cities and interesting locations marked.
Once landed, the player will be able to leave the ship and enter an ordinary map like you can experience them in current H-World game modules. I'm think about two scales, a 10x10 meter "outdoor" scale, and 1x1 meter "indoor" scale, but transitions between the scales don't work with the current H-World engine, therfore I'll start with the 1x1 meter scale and implement the parts that use this scale.
The holo tank image: currently I think I'll try billard-table like lower part with a slightly glowing surface and some stars/planets/spaceships floating above the table surface.
I'm not sure what level of detail makes sense for an image that is only sighlty larger than 64x64 pixels, but I'll see once the basic shape is modelled and a first preview is rendered.

I've tried to create a map tank, but it looks very much like an aquarium - there are planets floating there instead of ships, but the first impression is definitely the idea of an aquarium.
If someone wants to take a look, get H-World 0.4.0 and the sapce game module:

The tank is right in the space ship control room (the big room top left of your position after you star the game).
