I got Midget, and made these:

Antithesis[/url]
Halls of God

I made "Antithesis" as sort of a really creepy villians theme, one that captures the essence of evil as a very detatched, strange thing that isn't human in the normal sense, and difficult to understand. Its creepy but also kinda of ambiguous, kind of questioning.

"Halls of God" is meant to convey a journey to the center of existence. It's for a scene in a game I hope to make someday where the protagonist goes in search of God's center of being, into this "citadel" of a sphere where with each step one's dimensions decrease, getting ever smaller, until you get to the "plank" size that corresponds to the ratio of a light wave's radius to its energy. Scientists believe that "plank" size is as small as small can be. There at t=0, if God is anywhere, there he is. "Halls of God" is a work in progress, as I'm still learning to try to interweave harmony and melody. Does anyone have good references on this?

What do you guys think?

Er... I downloaded Midget 3.5 and tried to load the files in (even though they're supposed to be .m3 files instead of .txt files) and I got nothing. No notes, no sound, nothing.

Similar experience here - I opened one of them in ModPlug (which usually runs just about everything, even the DeusEx .umx files), got one bar of pretty good music, but then, unfortunatly, nothing.

They are actually MIDI format: according to WinAMP, the first is 0:07, the second is 0:19. They are... well... not very impressive from an expert perspective, although, for somebody just starting, they are actually really good. Actually, listening more than once results in the thought that MIDI isn't the best choice for the music at hand anyway. Try a MOD format (modtrack is a great little program that can load a MIDI into a Tracker format, then you'd just have to update the samples to higher quality instruments) that I'd recommend.

But the start isn't had so far. I could extrapolate several good songs that could come from these. In fact, if I have time today I'll post some samples that could give you more ideas.

Well, I'll be off for now, but again, keep up the work. I think these pieces, although small, indicate the presence of a good musical score underway.

PS. My contact info is on my profile if you'd like to talk directly; it'd be easier that way.

Heh... that's what I was getting too - I just thought it was modplug's fault that they were so short... :)

For a first attempt, they're really quite good. Well done!

In my most personal opinion I didn't like Antithesis to much. Loopy and you hear it. I would like something more after each sling. Halls of God was better. I even liked it :). Anyway, I'm not anyone to judge music. Can nothing about it. Yet I think it's a good start.

I originally made these with the Roland GS set that comes with Windows Media Player. Not the best ever, but in particular I think Antithesis sounds better on that set. I agree that it's the instruments that need tuning more than anything else, but the prospect of dealing with a tracker again is intimidating. :P I remember dozens of wasted hours trying to "loop" samples without clicking, and I don't want to go through that again.

Does anyone have a better solution?

modplug tracker allows you to import soundfonts for your instruments, so you don't have to do the looping crap yourself.
