Perhaps we should have an open-ended contest, for 2005.
Final Deadline is Jan 1st 2006?

I think the longer the comp the worse the outcome.

to each his own.
I opt for the open-ended competition, as its the only way I could possibly participate.
Anyone else?

I would prefer an open-ended competition, but I'm not sure I would want to work on a humorous RPG for that long. For me, it's very hard to find consecutive days to work on a project, since I typically work seven days a week.

Yeah, real life really seems to have taken it's toll on all of us....

I'm on good track for the end of the month... although graphics will be a definite problem. Maybe this open ended contest will be best, although too, hmm... why not have an annual awards ceremony, in which we vote for the best games of the year, and be done with it?

I think we'll probably make more games if we don't feel pressure to make them, although I can't speak for everyone. To be honest, although I think contests are good for drawing attention to games, I don't really like them, because participating means interrupting the flow of life and that always comes back to bite me in the ass.

It seems that everyone's dropped out because the time's inconvient - so why not just push the date back a few months in the hope that it suits everyone better? I assuming that everyone who's expressed an interest so far would still enter if they could, and I think they should - the projects I've seen so far have been very impressive.

I suggest we hold off until August. Does this change anything?

Personally I don't like the idea of an open ended compitition, but I'll go along with it if there's considerable interest in it...

I might, just might be able to pull something together in August....but time isn't something that I can come by easily.
Open-ended is still the only way I'll know I could finish.
I like Tony's idea about Annual Awards for best game of the year. It would be cool to get a few people to draw some award graphics, that the winners get to put on their site.
Perhaps 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards, and also possibly two categories of awards, one is for completed games, and the other is for incomplete games.

This way people can get an award for their great game...even if it isn't completed 100%.

Might be incintive for people to write more of their game instead of playing halo2 or something stupid...looks at a few people @ rpgd that had admitted to playing halo2 instead of working on something constructive.....;)
For the record I don't play halo2. ever. I hate microsoft & I wouldn't own an xbox if someone bought it for me.

well, my $0.02
gotta run.

Regarding the contest: I don't really care either way. If there is a 48 hour contest, I may participate. I have a fun game idea that I could probably complete in 48 hours, but doesn't deserve more time than that. However, if I really feel like making this game, I don't need a contest to motivate me. I probably won't participate in an open-ended contest.

Regarding yearly awards: I like this idea. I'm not sure if we have enough games each year to make this work. I am strongly opposed to giving awards to unfinished games for two reasons:
  • A game could, in theory, remain unfinished for many years and snatch up the unfinished game award each year. I feel that each game should get only one chance at being named game of the year.
  • I don't think perpetually unfinished games deserve any awards.

Each game may recieve 1 award, and only gets 1 chance at winning the award.
Games that show no progress whatsoever are either disqualified for awards (if voted), or are not eligible for any award.

Why not do both? I'd still really like to do a week long contest... Even a weekend one.

Hi guys. Is the contest off? Damn, and I have completed my game. This is what will happen to you if you are offline for a time. Anyway, the game is called The Tales of Griffin. Download and review, please.
I support the Annual thing too :).
