Well, as I said before, unless Bjorn is willing to let me mangle RPGDX itself, I've been striking out on my own to do this as a sister site. And, as a sister site it may/may not be RPG specefic. It might be for all games.
What do people think about this? _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

I think it is a great idea; however, I'm not sure there are/would be enough independently developed massively multiplayer games to warrant an entire site.
It might be better if it was multiplayer online games, with a maximum number of players listed for each game, that way people could sort the games by the number of players they support (per shard/instance).

note- just to keep confusion down- the site I'm working on is NOT a mmo game dev site. It's just an indie/homebrew game dev site. Think RPGDX++. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

I've been on holiday for a while and still am, staying with my girlfriend now. Hence haven't had much time to check up on RPGDX.
It's nice to see you want to improve on RPGDX, Mandrake. I also recognize I've been lacking in activity since about 3/4 year now so I understand the suggestion to start by yourself again. Personally I would prefer if you could join back into RPGDX development and try to make your improvements there. The site is publically available through Subversion, and anybody is free to check out the source and start making improvements. I guess a script would still need to be written that generates the initial database layout for doing a testing deployment.
Subversion repository:
http://www.lindeijer.nl/svn/public/RPGDX
I agree with mostly all suggested improvements here, although I feel reluctant to extend the community to include non-RPG games. The TODO file in the repository also contains many suggestions I still meant to work on.

Actually, I would rather do the improvements directly to RPGDX as well. I'll check out the subversion tonight. If I make the changes to RPGDX, it won't be to open it up to all games. It wouldn't be RPGDX otherwise. That was if I struck this out on my own. I'm glad to go back into the old code, it should be fun (espicially since I'm sure you made it look 10x more professional than I had originally coded). _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

That's good to hear! If you plan to start making changes, please feel free to contact me by email as I'll be happy to assist or advice. Just as I said, at the moment I'm relatively occupied.

I'm going to try and preserve the games we've got all ready, which might be hard with the additions I want to make. At the most (I hope) people will just have to add tags to their games. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

Hmm. If I'm going to edit RPGDX directly, I'm not sure if I'm going to rewrite the forums or continue to use this modified PHPBB. What does everyone think? _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

I'd opt to keep the forum as it is - unless you plan to make a forum that behaves exactly like this one :) I know there are a few problems with phpBB, but RPGDX hasn't ever had any real issues with exploits. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Hmm. Yeah I guess I could integrate the site and the current phpbb a little more completely by using something like php_fetch_all() (which is what I used on the Freya website) so that it could interact a little more completely with reviews and being able to post comments and notes to games. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

Just like to add that I love all the ideas so far, especially the slush pile, bug fix and RSS feeds. Things like teams also seem pretty great too, right now sim couldn't edit any game i've posted and vica-verca, but if we posted a game under a team name we could. Plus it'd work out great with the RSS feed, what with automatically naming and dating updates. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

I'd stick with phpBB, it is decently secure and well integrated into this website which would make it basically require a total rewrite to switch to something else.
Also the whole website is using the phpBB template class. I think it could be better to stick to that instead of introducing another one unless it's clearly more suitable for the job.

That's great! I was worried about conflicting templates. We should see if anyone wants to design a new theme around the release of the new version.
Also- can you PM/Email me info about the MySQL server (like, if we have a front-end currently in use like PhpMySQL or the like, or if I have to build new tables by hand...) _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

You mean phpMyAdmin? I use that for some rare changes to the database, like setting up a new contest because I still haven't bothered to write a special page for that. Other than that as I said we will need a database initialization script, which I will put in the Subversion repository when ready. Probably I can use phpMyAdmin to create that in a straightforward way.

Naw, I'll just create some .sql files that will generate the new tables and etc I'll need. I just wanted to look at PHPMyAdmin to get an idea of what the current database looks like. It's been a long time since I've looked at the code and you've made a ton of changes to it, and I think this might help me edit things (looking at the database structure) _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-
