This is a bit off-topic, but I never quite got that. People always act like 5/10 is a terrible score when it really is just average. 6/10 should be seen as a good thing (I'm not directing this at Chaotic Harmony; just making a general observation. Go have a look at gamefaqs.com reviews: "I thought this game was terrible. The graphics were sub-par, the music sucked, and the controls were horrible. 6.5/10.")

In terms of design, personally, I usually try to create characters that fit into my game world. If the setting's dark, all of my characters will be dark and serious-looking, for instance. In GTA, where the overall feel is that of organised crime/gangs, hot cars, big guns, and police chases, you'd be hard-pressed to find little miss perfect getting her hands dirty with the game's events. It just fits the mood. In fact, having decent, polite women wearing pretty skirts and fancy dresses with little exposed flesh and a dainty, delicate demeanor would be out of place for the scope of this series.

It's controversial, but I wouldn't call it unfair. As a game it has some pretty major flaws, and 95% seems too generous by far. That said it also had some great points to it, so the mark was up in the air I reckon. Anyhow, I trust EDGE too, so we'll see.

DOAXBV on the other hand, as the review mentioned, wasn't even really volleyball (rules were not consistent with volleyball). And as one reviewer said, it was just a poorly done peep show with monotonous animations and showy breast physics. :| I can understand FFX-2 getting a 6 / 10. The only thing great about that one was the changes to the battle engine (the scaling ATB, for example, was cool. I liked that so much I am immitating it).

- Keep in mind I am also a fan of DOA2. It's one of my favorite Fighting games. Despite the flashiness of the game I can appreciate the battle engine, which is several notches above Tekken 3+'s in terms of playability and speed, with the counter-system really adding a level of gameplay to it. But I don't like anything past that. DoA3, for example, wasn't really an improvement on the game, unless VPL is seen as an improvement. :| And then DOAXBV just completely turned me off to the series. Tecmo just has this thing with relying too much on busty women instead of gaming and unfortunately that seems to be all you need to sell a game these days. If you can render and jiggle the boobs, you'll get a huge following despite how lacking the gameplay is. And if you say I'm biased on that, hell, read the review. I'd like to see some good games again please.

It all went pear shaped with the move to Xbox for Team Ninja. It looks like with DOA Ulitmate they're trying to get back to their roots, but it's still very clear that they've made 2 re-makes of the same game and aren't progressing the series. I'd like to see counter-counters, throw and hold reversals, and maybe even some good dodge moves (I play Ayane usually, and she's got some great dodges, but it's very limited in other characters). Although really unless they go back to sony or multi platform i'll never play it anyway, which is sad.

- I play Ayane as well. She's the natural progression from Kasumi in terms of speed. Ayane has dodge moves because she's the weakest character in the game, and the majority of her moves require having her back to her opponent which sets up some nasty damage possibilities. Other characters just simply don't need them as much.

- But yet, it can be very annoying to fight people who simply sit there and do nothing but counter. I can't say DOA Ultimate interested me though, they advertised it as "Hey look, now you can play in a bikini online with your friends" instead of "hey look, here's what neat things we've done with the game to improve gameplay."

I thought so too. I used to play Kasumi all the time, but after doing a lot of bouts with Ayane it seems like she can't get the hits in quick enough to be effective. Also, I always thought Lei Fang was the weakest character (save a couple of spectacular counters), followed by Helena, but it must totally depend on how you play them. I've never had much time for helena, but Lei Fang is incredibly well balanced and timed as a character. And now i've completely abandoned the topic, sorry.

Seriously, people all over have the same problem. There should be a good bell curve for scores, with a ton of 4-6 scores, and only a few 1s and 10s. If you were to go back and play the game today, could you possibly give Halo a 10? Hell no... it'd be lucky to get a 7 from me with all the insipid level design and poorly designed multiplayer maps.

Me too. I basically see DoA, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter stagnating with little more than window dressing each time a sequel comes out. At least Namco is putting extra effort into the Soul Calibur series with plenty of game modes and options. The Weapon Master mode in SC2 was just plain fun... and addictive!

What?! I just fired up the game to make sure I was right, and Ayane is noticably stronger on a hit-by-hit basis than Lei Fang. Also, I had to fight against Jan Lee when I was playing through story mode, and he's in a totally different league in terms of power. Actually, Jan Lee is a pretty unfair character, he's quick and strong, and there's practically no notice of what moves he's about to do, so he's very difficult to counter.

I think you're looking at the fact that Ayane can do multiple hits in a short span of time, but Ayane's hardest Combo throw does considerably less damage than most characters by far.

Lei-Fang, on the other hand, has a triple-combo throw which does serious damage. And most of her moves are stunners.

And I was trying to be diplomatic on Jan Lee. Many would say he's overpowered. Any button masher can do pretty well with him.

- And of course you don't have any problems with that. Everyone loves a good set of magical anti-gravity breasts. I'm sure just about every woman would kill for a set of those. No bra needed.

Yeah, because anti-gravity boobs are certainly a real-life problem. Jesus christ, loosen the FUCK up! Stop whining about something that's confined to a medium such as video games where the point is far from telling people what the next fad in fasion is!
Yes, I agree the character design is unrealistic and somewhat ridiculous. Do I give a shit? No, because it's a goddamn VIDEO GAME, and it's sure as hell NOT trying to set ideals or say "THIS is what women should be like"-- just STOP, jeez... it's NOT hurting anyone, you're just working yourself up over it.
