- I've switched to smaller Sprites (but am using 4-way Tactics-style combat). Anyway they're a lot easier to do. I just thought I'd share the first set of directional sprites I've completed. The rest will easily fall into line after all the learning it took to do this. Rei Concept
- I'm still working on the Battle System changes, but it will be overtop the map engine using the tile system from the map mode as a battle grid. FFT/Chrono Trigger style. Incidentally the battle menu is much more dynamic. The "balls" spin around the player, and I'm in the middle of spriting up the symbols that go on each of them. I also am working on the centering / positioning code for battle sprites on the tiles. Fun fun. But this will be much easier than 128+ x 128+ sprites.

Is that skirt of hers really all that suitable for combat? :)
Seriously, shouldn't she be wearing leather or denim or something to protect her legs? _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Nice try, but they're shorts.
It's a unisex outfit worn by both the male and female version of the character. _________________ - Jaeda

Oh come on.
If I was up against a bug three times the size of me, I'd be wearing a lot more than a pair of shorts and a cloth coat... But then, that's just me - maybe Rei finds that cloth is more effective against a GIANT FUCKING HORNET than metal is.
I don't know - when you said that you hated that males are dressed in plate mail when females are showing off as much skin as they can, I sorta thought that what annoyed you was the realism aspect of it (and I agree with you there - I've got a female lead to worry about too, after all)... but it seems that what you really want is for the men to dress up in the same ridiculous outfits... :)

Yeah, but the character changes gender, so it has nothing to do with female/showing skin. I've read the backstory to most of the characters and this outfit does make sense. I don't know, it sounds like your beating a dead horse to me. Let it go. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

No offence or anything. | - Again, nice try, but it's a placeholder left over from my previous Combat system.
- As you can see, she's actually larger than it. However I have not made any enemy sprites since I switched to a smaller sprite system, so I am using the Wasp sprite a friend made for me until I make my own ( or can get someone to make smaller ones). I don't know if you've seen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind but as much as Giant Bugs are cool, a bug three times the size of a human cannot fly -- or if they could fly they wouldn't be very good at it, for the simple fact that since insects have exoskeletons their shells have to become thicker and harder to be able to support their mass (much as the larger a human the thicker their skeleton). As such any large insect I would officially use would not be capable of flight.
- Quoting another statement, yes, I am of the opinion that if a woman needs only to wear the minimum necessary to cover her body, then a man should also only need the same, since for one thing the male body is stronger and more resilient than the female body, as well as more tolerant to the environment. I thought I was quite clear when I pointed out my grevience with that inconsistency, but more than likely I'm sure you're trying to take my statement out of context. However, I know what I said. I never said bikinis are forbidden. I said "I am tired of women having to be dressed in bikinis while men are in full chainmail." A women in a bikini is no problem if the men around are in swimming trunks or a speedo. Which is why if I have a woman dressed up like some reject from a Tarzan movie, you can expect that her male counterpart will be equivalently dressed. I don't play favorites.
- And in closing, this character does not use cloth or metal as a defense, neither in male or female form. I have other characters that do, but their defenses are respective to their clothing. I withheld this statement the last time 'cause I figured you were just being a fleeting troll, but unfortunately for you I have thought out everything down to the smallest trinket he/she wears. The bands around her legs and the bands around her arms are not there for show, they are field emitters. Of course, they are not strong ones, since anything at that size would not have the capacity to store enough energy to disperse across a large volume (say, 6' x 6' x 6' ), so one or two hits at most. However, if you cannot kill a bug with a Lightsaber before suffering one or two hits, you have issues.
- Some of my characters do wear padded clothing, though. _________________ - Jaeda

Love the new sprites, they've got a great sense of style about them. They look really complex up close, was that just pixel skills, or was it originally a different resolution? It's going to be a bitch to animate, good luck. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

- Thanks, that's several hours in working at 1200%. I think it'll be Okay. The hurdle was the side views and learning how to do that. Something a bit different from the default hard "90%" view. But I'm pleased with it, particularly the "looking left" view.
- Animations at this size are really easy though. I'm having no trouble forming limbs since they don't have to have the same shape as my originals did. _________________ - Jaeda

Very nice job on the sprites; I particularly like the one in your sig, seems to break from the standard "four directions and no other poses" idea... Kinda like Chrono Trigger did, actually-- there looks to be some influence with the poses and general style. (of course that's not to say they don't have a style of their own)
The grass tile is a bit, well, tile-ish, but I'm sure you knew that already and it looks just like a test background anyway. I'm sure it'll be much more interesting with a proper map in the background.
One thing that is kinda bugging me (no pun intended, and this may just be me) is the shadows of the enemies; I'm not sure if they're part of the sprite, as you said they are just test sprites, but if it's seperate you may want to make it... well, I don't know the right word apart from maybe 'taller'. Right now it doesn't quite seem to match the perspective... I think they need to be slightly more 'fully' circular.
Overall, very good job though-- haven't heard from this project in awhile, it's cool to see it's still in development.

- I had a hard summer. :( But a friend's sprite from Pixelation really inspired me to get back into it. I walked into the C++ port thinking it would be so easy without having to use extreme convoluted methods to get my graphics into the game and with a real 8-bit/channel palette but then I got overzealous with the sprites, reminiscent of the old game's style. I really like Tactics, Chrono Trigger, and as much as I hate FFX-2, I liked the ATB . So I'm going that route. And smaller is easier.
- The Tiles were also a donation from a friend, I'm hoping to work on a tileset shortly, but it's not as big of a deal, since as long as the map engine works properly then it's just a matter of loading the textures in.
- As for the bug shadows, the shadows come with the sprite. In fact the Rei sprite isn't finished yet in the sense that the project uses 32-bit PNGs (meh, PNGLib was easy to use and learn) and I have the freedom to have partially translucent colors. Once the sprite's got all its frames I will add the proper alpha to the shadow.
- But I agree with what you're saying about the bug sprite. The system is still using the old display format though. I hope to have all of that code switched by tonight. _________________ - Jaeda

I saw that walking animation in your sig a couple days ago-- was it done by Ace, by any chance? I don't know him personally but I remember him from pixellation, and it looks like his style of animation...

FriedChiko... I remember seeing lots of his stuff at Pixelation, I think he did art for some compo entry here awhile ago, too... speaking of Pixelation, though, what exactly happened to that place? I know it's not really there anymore now but I don't know the details.
Just out of curiosity, how many frames are you planning on using for character animations? I guess four frames is kind of 'standard', but personally I think that style of sprite could really benefit from eight-frame animations-- and it's generally a simple matter to add a few frames in the middle and copy/paste and tweak the others...
Anyhow, it should be cool to see this progress-- I suppose that's considering you continue to post updates. :p
Something just came to mind; I knew those sprites reminded me of something, but I wasn't sure what... I just remembered someone who used to post on Pixelation, Noadi I think, who had a project with a similar art style (Shaman, I believe, or something similar at least)-- the sort of soft coloring style without any real harsh outlines. I think it works well in those screenshots, though of course it's a bitch if blends into the tiles too much.

- I've not been on Pixelation for a while because I'm an evil troll and I went on hiatus to calm my bitterness, only to receive a fresh infusion of it with the upcoming games. But since I moderate the Pixelation chat, I've noticed that it's gone through several "temp" forums and such, and is currently
http://pixel-arts.org/pixelopolis/
Here.
- As for Noadi, she and I are very good friends so I'm not surprised there. Our styles have similarities.. though she is more pastels and her sprites in general are softer in design.
- As for animation, I really like Chiko's sprite and am using it as a basis for my works.. so more than likely I will use 8. _________________ - Jaeda
