Ah your price tag for "Explorations" is exhorbitant. Just so you know. :) $60 dollars is a rough sell for people who do not need your product, but may want it, when they need all of the money they can spare for gas.

I was actually mildly interested (I don't get into 3/4 view stuff) until I saw the pricing. Reminds me of release prices for MS' stuff back in the 90s....

agreed. i think for those who are looking for such a product will be pleased with what it has to offer for $60. people don't flinch at spending $50 for a game on pc, ps2, xbox, gc.. this will help you MAKE games. awesome.

i think too many people have pirated things like rpg maker or used the hacked copies thinking they were free in the first place.

i think the real thing here is that someone puts a price on their work, it doesn't mean you have to buy it. people who realize and need the product will buy it for the price given. if there are no sales, then the price will have to be adjusted to meet the market. constructive comments might help the creator of the product adjust things to the market, but saying "your product, $$ dollars for that?.. stupid!" isn't going to cut it.

One could call this a clear case of "you get what you pay for" you can get a working product done by a able developer for $60 or you can get WorldDyne/Iconsole developed by LordGalbalan for free.

Neither is my cup o' tea but one of them seems to be worth the price.

Well, the price of a product has almost nothing to do with the amount of effort that goes into it. By that rubric, you would have to put in more man-hours than id invested in Doom 3.

The price of the product should be matched to its relative value in the marketplace. I don't know much about your product, but the screenshots I've seen put it below, but within spitting distance, of 2D commercial games in terms of eye candy, which seems to be a huge influence on the initial buying decision. Being able to make your own game is a bonus, but also means that you'll have fewer buyers, because people willing to put that time into it will be fewer.

I don't think your price is exorbitant, but I do think it sounds a little high, since top-shelf games actually cost less. You'll get some buyers, but you'll also put a lot of people off with that price. I suspect you'd make more money overall if you placed the price tag at $35-ish.

You might also consider charging less for the engine, and then selling "content packs" for about $5 a pop. That allows you to charge less, reducing the barrier to adoption, but still recoup the money. It also allows you to more easily stage your release, since supplied content doesn't have to be all completed before you ship. For the end user, that gives them an "economy" option if they're willing to generate their own content, and it will allow a community of third-party content vendors to grow up around your product, driving adoption further.

Well, all things considered, he probably doesn't expect to sell as many units as id did. To be actually on par, Doom 3 should have cost about $60,000 per copy(Assuming 1mil units moved, and exploreRPG expects 1000).

Per the actually thread title, I'd like to note that the usership has surpassed 600.

one could say that because this is a niche product & you have a target income, that you should price accordingly to these factors. thus..

60,000$ target
1000 in the niche
60$ a copy

then again, the legal japanese version of the rpg maker series does very well.. in japan. ^_^ perhaps a japanese localization of explorations is in order?

Neat idea. I always wondered what the indie RPG scene was like over there, but the language barrier usually stops any forays into japanese websites before they even begin. Pity really, I bet it's pretty healthy.

But to clarify..

The price is just the price.. I don't really have a "fair comparison" for software because Explorations is a one of a kind.. So I tried to keep things reasonable.. (realistic) - Explorations has a dictionary/spell checker.. Did you know buying complete dictionary lists are about $500/ea? - Just the list..

Saying that.. There has been guys who have came to my site when I released 15FREE copies and now have commercial licenses. Simply by posting, debugging and helping the community as a whole.

So those looking at Explorations for $60.. Consider getting the COMMERCIAL edition for $60.. (and can sell your games for a profit.) - How can u do this? Order the $60 version and debug the hell out of the software. Post suggestions.. Join me in making it better.

I've said this many times... I am NOT a greedy person. People who help are rewarded.. I've sold alot of copies, and you can look at my member list and see the licenses that are out there. (It hasn't been updated in a while...but its growing.)

Ordering helps the server stay up, and will hopefully get a community based server for MMOG hosting.. So honestly, its more than just the 1's and 0's you download. There is a guy (me) on the other end of this project trying to make something happen and have fun along the way.. If u don't want to have fun, Explorations isn't for you.. If being *over critical* and *flaming* new ideas is what gets you off... Explorations isn't for you..

Simply.. Explorations is just a hobby that has/can grow to a small business.. Join/Order if you like what I've done.. Who knows what the future will hold.. (maybe real 3D) hehe

But back on topic..

People who come to a forum and see a project that shows quality and potential flamed are really "turned-off" by such a community. The entire RPG movement has slowed because of soo many wanna-bes claiming their engine was going to be awesome but have nothing to show for their efforts..

And now with the release of WoW every kid wants to make a MMOG.. Real-programming skill is being distorted by drag/drop, OO overkill.. Its un-realistic...

Its easy to *flame*, *brag*, and *talk trash*... Its harder to PROVE IT.

When I recieve 1 order for every FLAME Explorations has recieved, I'll consider the project justified.. And maybe I'll release remaining copies for free.. hehe

Uh, from where are you getting ripped off like that? First, public, free dictionaries are available all over the place. It would not be terribly difficult to grab definitions off of those, should you need them. Second, GNU has a spell checking package, which is public and free (assuming that you capitulate to that silly copyleft license). The (current?) version is aspell.
