I have a start on a compo entry I was working on for the compo back in June that fell through - the humor-based one. I was going to do "Final Fantasy Noir," which was going to revisit the cardboard characters from FFI and attempt to give them some personality and drop them into a gritty, Sam Spade-like story. I was thinking of calling it the "Case of the Maltese Chocobo."
I kept working on it for a while afterward, but I've since lost interest in the project, because it apparently had too much in common with the "Sin City" movie that came out around the same time. Everyone I showed it to thought I was riffing off of the movie, which kinda annoyed me, so I just dropped it.
I had a 3D walkabout engine mostly working, an environment editor mostly working, and a 2D twitch combat system completely working.
Here's a screenie from the combat system:
If you have the Shockwave Player plugin installed, you can see the combat system in action. You can get the plugin from here. In the demo, you can fight two of the potential foes from the game - a sai-wielding madame (shown above) and a dim-witted street thug. Whee. _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.

That demo looks nice, but it's terribly buggy. Hitting space during a scene where you have to hit an arrow counts as a miss (makes it really awkward to get through the dialogue that plays during battles) and oftentimes you take a hit immediately because of what I assume's a problem with an internal timer used to check how long you've been on a given fight screen.
Still, I love the film noir feel. :D This could be pretty good if you tweaked the interface a bit. I thought it was pretty fun. _________________ Endless Saga

They're probably deliberately slowing down the process as I've already gone there twice to explain how pressing this was. Their current excuse? "Well, it's in the mail, so you should be receiving it any day now. :)" ) |
I can sympathise. I'm looking for a place to live in Dublin for college next year, and it's far from straightforward. First of all, no one seems to want to take a flat of lads (there's 5 of us looking together), so even when you find somewhere nice, you're told when you enquire that it's already taken (even if you call less than a minute after an ad has been placed on the net, like I've done a few times). Everywhere else is an overpriced dump. So far anyway.
None of this is helped by the pointless red tape you've got to work around to get anywhere - I have to give a bank statement of my parents to prove that I've got something to fall back on (they should have no right to ask for that, but there you go), and they all want a letter from your university, signed by the provest, to prove that you're really a student, and not just pretending to be one.
I don't know how banks work in Canada, but maybe you can just go in and get a draft straight from your account? It's practically the same thing, I'm sure your landlord will take it if he's a reasonable guy.

I'm all for compo's, but like mandrake I prefer the 48h game-making marathons where you can do it really intensely, and then everyone submits something really odd and often unplayable. Anyway, wasn't the original idea to have it when (if?) the new RPGDX is finished? There will have to be some spontenaity about the thing, and not everyone can get a week free. |
No see, that's the point :) There were two people in this thread talking about how hectic thier social lives were, and how they'd never find a weekend to code in because of it! On the other hand, there are a lot of weekends in two weeks. So if you spare a weekend, great, if you can't, you can still take part.
Anyway, I've just been suggesting things in line with what everyone seems to want (based on what they've written) - so please suggest something else if you can think of something more suitable. I really am very flexible :)

Let me do a quick check of my "abandoned" folder...
The Guardian: three unfinished versions for three different contests - last October's Hecate contest, the contest Nephilim won and Darkdread's pureQB contest years ago.
untitled: an unfinished text adventure about a team of scientists for Nekrophedious's text adventure contest last year.
DejaVu: Another unfinished contest entry for the Cloris Call. I actually abandoned this one mid contest and replaced with the Guardian again.
I thought I had more than that... oh well.
Ugh. I never seem to be able to finish anything. It's really depressing.

That's a shame. Judging by that demo of yours from the last contest, I think it's safe to say that we would have been beaten senseless :)

Yeah, I guess I could have had it ignore spaces. Good suggestion. The idea was that if you hit any key other than the given direction, it's a miss, but for niceness' sake, I could ignore the space.

Hmm. Not sure what you mean here - do you mean that even if you don't press anything, it hits you immediately? Because as soon as you hit the wrong key, it hits you.
(One thing that the final game was going to have was an adjustable combat speed, so that for people with slow reflexes, you could tweak the game to still be challenging but not incredibly frustrating. This would also help with the combat banter getting a little monotonous. The game would also of course allow you to choose which keys you use for combat.)

Glad you liked it. I had fun making it. Requires a lot of full-screen graphics, tho, so it would have been hella demanding to produce for a completed compo entry (if I wanted to have more than, like, two or three foes to fight). _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.

Yeah, what I meant was that sometimes, as soon as it would switch to the battle scene, I'd take a hit without even pressing anything. Something along the lines of non-reinitaliser timer or keys remaining in the buffer, dunno.
Do you intend to finish that project, even if it wouldn't be for that competition? It was pretty fun, really. _________________ Endless Saga

I second that, I loved that high contrast Noir look, even if it did get kinda difficult quite quickly. The two-button sections seem very picky about timing I reckon. But it's unfinished, so i'm sure you know this stuff.
I did an entry for DD's pureQB compo too. It was that crazy 80's one with a broken battle engine. I also did this for a compo over here I think. Code's still on my HD, semi-working, along with a million other projects that never saw the light. I never finish anything either. It's practically a feature of BGC. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

Thanks a lot. It's not much, but there ya go - it's one of the best things I ever programmed. Sad. Anyway, now it's on rpgdx, so there. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

Hey, don't feel bad. After all, this is one of the best things I ever coded. Heh. It's pretty embarrasing now - I remember being so proud of that... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Heh, I kinda liked playing that way back when. Some sections are hella-difficult though I thought. I remember reading vplanet religiously at one point - so i'm quite impressed by that. Their review system was pretty harsh at the best of times, heh. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

I should know - I reviewed a few games for them back in the day. In hindsight, their review system was a little pointless - there wasn't any point in having such a tough (and often unfair) review system - they weren't trying to protect consumers from buying inferior products or anything like that - they were just picking apart the faults of teenagers' pet projects. It's all well and good to have something to aim for (and a high review score on Vplanet was considered a pretty good achievement for a QB game), but they could sometimes be a little needlessly cruel.
Of what I wrote for them, I was pretty happy with this article, but not with any of the others. And one in particular is complete trash... or at least one, anyway. :)
Thanks, BTW. Though it's a little embarrasing that I've been making games since I was eight years old and that's the best thing I've got to show for it... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

You should be, I thought it did the game justice. I played it with sim for ages, until we figured out how to cheat it. Just raise your taxes disgustingly high, and then put them down again to just higher than the original rate. You get a net gain in happiness, and plenty of disposable income. Then send your Orcs over to Dwarf town and do some killin'. Those were the days, heh. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.
