Yes, just jumping in head-first without any type of plan or specification, nor universal support, is exactly the thing that should be done. Brilliant idea Galbalan!

What if some of the reviews aren't so 'mini'?
You could just group them into 'old' and 'new' categories.

Well, not sure if that would work. I had forgotten that we simplified the reviews to encourage more people to actually do reviews. So, I would like to use both review styles. The review with only one rating to encourage people to do reviews, and the more in-depth review to help out users more.

Also, I'm thinking about a community involvement incentive program to boost games in their ranking. Not sure if this would be interesting/worthwhile/or what, but the more a user participates (ie:the more reviews they write, the more articles they contribute, all in all giving themselves into keeping the community active) will slightly effect their raw ranking of their games.

Or maybe not. I'm still mostly peeking over the code right now, trying to see exactly how Bjorn made changes and how I'm going to strap on these new ideas. The toughest part (I fear) will be combining the AJAX stuff with the template files.

In the future (ie: this won't be implemented until everything else is implemented) I'm thinking about also adding in a game suggest system, much like how Amazon/Netflix suggests movies based on user prefrences. Again- this wouldn't be until much later.

The current plans of changes will be done in this order:
1. replacing genre with tags.
2. Adding in live search algorythm for tags+data
3. Create tag clustering
4. Blog system that can be integrated (via blog auto-structures) to the news, game journal, use journal and articles. This will allow all of these to also have comments.
5. Comments on games
6. Any review of an unfinished game will become a "preview"
7. Devr defined downloads. This will allow for multiple versions of a game, a different download for each OS and also downloads for things like goodies (manuals, treats, etc).
8. The slushpile system. A warning to keep games from the slush.
9. A bug tracking system
10. A rewards system for people giving back to community
11. A new theme/skin for the website
12. Teams and teams being able to edit each other's games.
13. Team icons.

Of course, the site will actually have all the updates at once. These are just the order I plan on implementing them on my test server.

I plan on getting this all up in ready mid-September. How about we plan an RPG compo for October to celebrate the massive changes?

Bjorn- is it possible I can have a full SQL dump, including the phpbb tables? I was planning on just building it on my test server first, and then uploading/commiting when it's usable and bug-free.

Thanks.

If you want, just put it into the SVN and I'll pull the latest.

YES.

Here are some mad suggestions:

- Have the theme be RPG hybrids. Instead of regular battle systems and walkabout engines, the point of the contest would be to make a platform RPG, or a racing game RPG, a civ-style strategy game RPG or whatever.

- Have the theme be "spin-offs" - design an RPG based on another RPG, using a minor character (and original graphics and music). Some suggestions : What does Elone get up to with that wonderful power of hers as she spends her childhood on that white SeeD ship in FF8? Why did Goriden know so much about Imeon and the hero in Baldur's Gate? What happens to Jea after she leaves Drek's party in Diver Down?

- Make the theme be about limitations : so many colors, so many instruments, particular tile sizes - for example, make an RPG in the style of a NES game, or gameboy game, or C64 game...

- Make the theme artistic : enforce a palette limitation, allow only black and white and shades of gray, or allow only green, yellow and blue like the film Amelie, or everyone tries to use a celshading style, or something like that.

- Make the contest games all have to take the same setting. We build a brand new world on the Wiki, and everyone has to coordinate thier games so it takes place in the same world at the same time, with the same locations. Each entrant will have to design at least one of the world's towns.

That's all I can think of right now, but "go contest"! I am very much in favor of contest! Contest forever!

We should totally go for the gameboy option, test everyone's tiling skills in all their 4 'colour' goodness. I've been itching to try this ever since I got Seiken Densetsu (final fantasy adventure US) from japan. What res is a GB screen anyway?

160x144, I think. It's something screwy like that that stops you from just doubling it to fit the screen (I once tried to emulate a GB game in QB).

I wonder how hard it would be to make an actual Gameboy game? I found a few links on the subject, but can't check them all at work (I'm using Google Caches to fool the websense blocker, but they're probably out of date):

http://fms.komkon.org/GameBoy/Tech/Software.html
www.loirak.com/gameboy/gbprog.php
http://icarus.ticalc.org/articles/z80_faq.html
http://www.angelfire.com/fl/rhall/gbprog.html

I'd totally do a GB contest - Link's awakening is one of the greatest games ever made, after all, so it's certainly possible...

I tried to write a master system game once, it's incredibly difficult unless you have the actual developers tools Sega gives out. I got as far as 'hello world', and it took me all day. But yeah, I also loved the GB Zeldas (and who could forget pokemon?) so i've got some good memories of the system.

Well, there is an indie GB developer C compiler, which makes that a ton easier. But, not everyone will want to learn how to program the GBC in order to a short mini-rpg compo.

I personally liked the shared world idea.

I would encourage you to make your changes incrementally instead.

I've put up an SQL dump and emailed you the URL. Be aware that this should not be public data.

It won't be. My server is just a test server, meaning it's not even hooked into my broadband connection. It's only for using as a testbed.

I might do incremental updates then. Depending.

I personally wouldn't be able to take part in an October compo. (October will be my busiest month as we prepare for Halloween - in fact, we've already started construction on this year's major new attraction.)

That said, I really like the "same setting" idea for the compo. Not only is that a really cool idea, but people not competing in the compo (like me) would at least be able to contribute to the game world via the Wiki.

We might even be able to go back to the idea we discussed earlier about having a common save game format, so your adventurer could go from one RPG to another. If we're ever going to try that, it makes sense to do it when everyone's using the same game world, because you don't have to worry about mapping onto unknown magic and combat systems.

Good, good. I should have a patch to send to Bjorn sometime this week that will replace genre with tags and implement a live search with saved search features.
