Bjørn, can i just ask how you did the gradient thing for the logs? Did you do i all manually or use some sort of tool? I wasn't sure quite what to do.. i used a lighten/darken brush.. it just didnt look quite right.

I used GIMP. I took both of your versions, putting the gradiented logs in the top layer and set it to only modify color value (brightness), then I set it to about 50% opacity I think.

My only other crit right now is that "V" shape on top of the house - it doesn't seem right. Shouldn't the lines go down from the gables, instead of from the apex?

I agree... it doesnt look quite right. But im afraid you've lost me with your talk of apex' and gables.. :s

Ok thanks Bjorn!

Well, I like it. It's an improvement over the others in terms of stance at any rate. I'd start by checking the waistcoat though, it's got a bizzare shape. Plus I miss the mullet like 'flicks' at the corners of the old hair - very fetching, if you happened to live in sweden in the 80's.

I still think you should consider making your sprite less symetrical. Throw in a few features, like a stray lock of hair or something like that. It's what most SNES sprites did (and personally, the formula I stick to with ROM hacks.)

Edit: In fact, for a better example, check out my avatar.

Notice how the hair isn't symetrical, but rather seems to fall into place of its own accord. It's hard to have details in 16x24 sprites, but y'get the picture. ;)

The stance looks more realistic than in the old one, but the shoulders seem to stick out a little too much and the arms too thick. The result is that the arms seem rounded and stubby (though not that much.)

The shading looks pretty good, assuming the light source is coming from directly above. Nice. :)

I have sorted out the waistcoat, I have given him the 80's mullet flicks and I have made his hair less symetrical. O and also i have made him high res! I shall post him later.

Actually... see him as my avatar!

Heh heh, the horrible majenta is what we have as a transparent colour 'cos its a colour I'm NEVER going to use voluntarily for any of the in game graphics.

I shall change it for my avatar purposes!

I have much more trouble doing the profile view of a sprite. I have no idea why but it never seems to look quite right...

Lil' OT, but why not simply change the picture into a gif and make the background color transparent?

The reason i don't do that is because I'm still very new to all this and I don't have a clue how to do that.. Heh heh I am uneducated in these things..

You can do it with png's as well. In psp go to "colors" > set palette transparency, do what it says and reduce it to a 256 colour palette, then click on "set the transparency value to palette entry:", then click on the backgound colour, then send me all your money through the post. Got it?

No point in starting a new thread for this graphic because that would be silly! Anyway just thought I'd show something I did a little while ago in a kind of Castlevania style.. Sorry about the majenta, can't be arsed to change it!

Woah man, that is NICE. :o

Compared to your earlier sprites, you've improved quite drastically in the past months. That sprite looks very good. Of course, blindly praising something is just as bad as bashing it without criticism, so on with the criticism!

I think there's only one problem I have with this, frankly. The shading is a little plain, IMO. Although you've got some pretty good gradient in there, it makes the character look unnaturally flat. Like he was dry-pressed just a few minutes ago.

And... well, that's pretty much it, really. I'm not too good with proportions myself, but it looks like you pulled that off well enough. The character's stance isn't too rigid nor symmetrical, so it looks quite a bit more realistic than your first attempts.

Great job!
