So I was at Target today, and saw "Legend of Zelda 2" for Gameboy Advance on sale super cheapo - under $10 - so I picked it up, hoping to see what the early buzz about Legend of Zelda was all about.
This game sucks. It's more like a platformer than anything else, which is fine except that I suck at platformer games. But the worst part is that the RPG-like elements are so player-hostile, it's practically unplayable. You need hundreds of experience points to go up a level, and the stuff I'm currently fighting typically yields about 2 xp per critter - many foes you fight yield no xp at all. That much is fine, but whenever you save your game to turn off your Gameboy Advance, your xp towards the next level are reset back to zero! What is up with that? It's hard enough ekeing out the time to play it at the lower levels - when I start needing even more xp to go up a level, I'm not going to be able to advance in the game because I won't be able to carve out a long enough block of time to level completely from scratch in one sitting.
I guess I'm discovering why Zelda 2 is cluttering up the cheapo bins. I'm all for bringing back old games for new platforms - especially ones I missed the first time around - but they really should use the new tech to at least make things like user interfaces better. You can leave the original graphics and stuff for nostalgia value, but fix the bad human-interface design problems. _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.

Zelda 2 is often thought of as the worst in the series. Nobody actually knows why Nintendo bothered to go 'platform' style...
Play Zelda 1 instead. Thats cool!

Or Battle of Olympus! It's a game built with the Zelda II engine that for some reason Zelda fans hate, even though it's probably one of the best NES RPGs ever.
I think Nintendo should have had better sense than to rerelease one of their weakest games. Just my opinion though. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

I liked Zelda 2. However, I played it on an emulator, which took most of the frustration out of it. Out of the Zelda games I played, I consider Majora's Mask the weakest one.

I hear this a lot, but I couldn't have a more opposing view - the quirkyness of Majora's Mask drew me in totally, as did the darkness and strangeness of some story elements. Plus I thought it had a refreshing narriative perspective, especially compared to Ocarina and Wind Waker. Although, I did find it a bit rich that they just re-used everything right down to key character graphics. _________________ Previous nicks: MidnightDreamer, The_Anarchist, Shroomasta.

Yeah, that's been filtering around lately, and I agree completely with just about everything in it.
Last night, instead of resuming play on Zelda 2, I busted out Solitaire on my Treo, because I didn't have enough time to level up. I think this game is already dead to me. What a waste of cash. _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.

I made it all the way to Dark Link. On the NES.
I didn't win of course, because the AI is quite a trick. My cousin narrowly won, so I saw the ending anyway and stopped trying.
The secret to leveling up is to kill the flying unicorn heads. They grant something like 20 points a pop, I think?

I haven't seen any flying unicorn heads yet, and I doubt I will, because I just don't think I'm going to pick up the game again. The interface issues are just too arbitrarily obstructive.
Seems like something like this would be a good basis for a compo - take an RPG that sucks and make it good. I suspect many people on this forum could spend a weekend and make a way better Zelda 2. _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.

I remember getting to the next to the last dungeon and thinking "I really don't want to bother with this crap." That's about the time I bought my first SNES game, so... :)

I think one of the best side-scrolling RPGs (I'm using the term RPG loosely) I've played is Simon's Quest for the NES.

I've tried Simon's Quest, and found it to be so insanely difficult that I was unable to make any progress even on an emulator. Too bad, because the game really looked interesting.
My vote for the best: Feyna's Quest, unless I'm not allowed to vote for my own game, in which case I'd have to go with Sorcerian.

I totally agree about simons quest. In fact, when I saw it in the shops nearby I couldn't stop myself from buying it. Well, it was the best on the NES anyway, the later castlevania's on the GBA were better graphically while essentially being the same game. The GBA castlevanias rocked so damned hard. :D
Zelda II was just plain bad, for a Zelda game. As a game independant of the series it came from, however, it was pretty good. It had a lot of flaws (such as the previously mentionned EXP thing and the incredibly long road to an even harder final stage) but played out allright.
I remember accidently knocking the cartridge over while in the 6th or 7th dungeon and losing my saved game. That was one of the most horrible things that had ever happened to one of my NES games at the time, seeing as making it that far was so frikin' hard. I still beat the game afterwards though, but good god was having to go through all that again hard and frustrating... _________________ Endless Saga
