I think it looks pretty damn cool as well. Of course far too many people are mindlessly bashing it-- "it looks like a sex toy-- it's horrible-- nintendo's messed up again-- don't fix what ain't broke--" etc. :p
It's new, it's different, I personally love the idea. And don't forget what people were saying about the DS before it came out...

On one hand, it's very much an analog controller, and I really much prefer digital input. Analog input feels sloppy to me. You can't use a controller like that to play old-school 2D games, and I haven't felt like buying a 3D game since the novelty wore off at the end of the 90s.

On the other hand, if somebody uses that controller to make a real swordfighting game where you actually control your sword directly instead of firing off predefined attacks, I want to play it.

If you turn the controller 90 degrees it looks kinda like a nes pad :p.

There was a second controler with an analog stick on it...

I thinks it's an interesting idea but it's going to be the software that makes it or breaks it.

I don't think the touchscreen on the DS is going to add anything to 2D castlevania but it's in the upcomming game. I hope there won't be too much of things like that on the revolution.

I believe they are going to make a game like that. Have you seen the video for the controller?

It will be the software that really makes or breaks this.. but i totally trust nintendo to deliver on the software front!

Nintendo are creating a 'shell' for the remote that should look something like an ordinary gamecube controller or something similar. You can play old skool games on that.

I didn't see any real games in that video. I think that was all markeing how much fun you *might* have with the controler. Untill you get tennis elbow or your arm starts hurting from being outstreched.

Yes thats true, there were not any real games. But it shows that they at least have the ideas.. Well we can only hope and pray!

You can turn the controller sideways to play NES games like that, it's intentional. Also the Revolution has Gamecube controller ports on the side, (as it plays GC games too) so you could use those.

You might as well play with an ordinary remote control. I think that they'll lose alot of costumers on this one. Imagine to play Soul calibur or resident evil with that thing? Impossible. Play Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. In it, you had health, magic, and sanity. The lower your sanity, the more the game started to get weird. Walls bleeding, bugs crawling across the screen, your character slowly shrinking, etc... there are some really cool ones, like a faked restart (flashes back to the game after a few seconds), inventory temporarily disappearing, even a fake ENDING and ad for a non-existent sequel. Very interesting stuff.

As a (late) side note, you could use the Sega Bass Fishing controller on the Dreamcast to do exactly that. That thing was a lot like the new revolution controller, as in, it was a light gun-type thing that you waved about on the screen to move stuff. The analogue stick moved the characters in Soul Caliber, and waving the fishing controller about moved the characters weapon on screen.

Somehow, it seems less that revolutionary when you realise you already owned it 5 years ago, heh.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and apparently it was quite a lot of fun, which bodes well. Unfortunately, it also proved more difficult than using the control pad, but then i'm willing to bet no-one ever took it to extremes. Or did they?

That's probably complete bunk. Nintendo makes most of their money through game sales, since all games MUST be manufactured through them if they're to be licensed, and since the "key" in the software is a Nintendo logo, unlicensed games are now illegal to produce since it ends up falling under copyright infringement (you still have to use the "key", and since you're not authorized to do it, it's copyright infringement). For them to abandon this would be 100% unheard of, and since Nintendo still has this image to maintain of a "family console", don't expect to see them fall short of maintaining their image just to support us indies anytime soon.

Sony on the other hand is using an open technology (Cell processor, google it for details fo what I mean by this) so if anyone were to open their console to indies, it'd be them. But it's doubtful that they're going to do it either, since their money also comes from game sales.

Microsoft, of course, will let anyone develop for their console...if they pay the horribly high fee for the SDK.
