So, I finally got a nice white-collar job at a computer desk doing php web programming stuff last week. It's pretty sweet, I freakin' work at an office building in downtown Vancouver! Feels kinda surreal considering that my last job was at a muffin shop :)

Wow. You're really green. You haven't even made it to disillusionment yet.

It takes a while for the whole "grateful to even have a job, let alone a decent one" thing to wear off. I suggest we take bets on when it happens.

Congrats, btw :)

Congrats!

Enjoy that blissful moment after the "YAY HIRED!" phase and before the "Well... routine..." phase. ;) It's way too short-lived.

I wish I could get a job doing something I enjoy (programming). However, though my knowledge is somewhere between acceptable and intermediate, my experience is nil. It'll be a while before I can do something like that.

Enjoy it while you can! :)

Yeah, congrats. The first month and paycheck will be real sweet, then it'll go downhill.
Not meant to break you down or anything :).

Only if you don't enjoy what you do.

I really don't think it'll go downhill. First of all, I'm not in a big soulless cubicle farm. It's a small office with only two other people (occasionally three). And -this is the important part- they're actually really nice people. I mean, they expect me to get work done but they aren't jerks about it like some previous managers I've had... err... every previous manager I've had.

Nice to know I'll have my student loans paid off by the end of the year, too :)

By "going downhill", what I mean is that point where things become routine. Get up in the morning, go to work, work on some projects, oh noon, time for lunch, etc..

Settling in a routine like that is pretty crappy, and it's very easy to do. Work becomes second nature and you don't find yourself challenged as much as when you started. It's still fun (hell, it's still challenging!) but y'know... it's just "work" ;)

Definately not as boring as working retail though!! Not by a long shot!

Ah, yes. I could definitely see that happening, since it seems we do pretty much the same kind of work for all our clients (mostly making online payment forms, though occasional other miscellaneous web design stuff) As for now it's quite challenging getting into all the details of form/transaction processing though.

And yeah, fuck retail.

So XMark, how are things at work now? Say that it is very good and we'll swap ;).

Woah! Either you didn't take out so much loans or your paycheck is eh, huge?

Well Verious... to be honest, I'm going apeshit and bananas at my work. Most of the people there are splendid friends and that might be the only thing that makes me stay there. And the money of course.

I took out $9000 student loans for my last year at BCIT, but only had to spend about half of it, plus for some reason the government spontaneously decided to forgive $2000 of debt off my loan a couple of months ago, so I'll be rid of 'em real soon.
