Well that's probably from the complaints generator. But I think the intarweb is getting sentinent. Just look at what it generated for me just now:

Well, y'know, me being a demented xenophobic party animal and all... that's kinda true. :) Only on weekends though. Gotta work during the week.

Well, it's technically done. In 24 hours! Few screenshots...

Status screen. I rushed through character creation, so they're all called "111111" :D I did take the time to create a female artisan for the first character, but let the game take over for the rest. None of the menu options work save for two of them, unfortunately.

Status screen being one of them. Artisans have very average stats. No, that equipment is just a mock-up. ;) Unfortunately equipment/items are one of the things I couldn't implement in this time frame. Spells are the other one. So most classes are seriously disadvantaged by this. Hey, 24-hour project.

I did create a VERY configurable set of windows/fonts. Shown in action here.

The dungeon. The layout is randomly generated from a set of pregenerated rooms. I went for something simple to fit it in the timeframe I had.

And now, a battle! Animations are primitive at best as I didn't have enough time to implement animation scripts. Sprites are fully-animated à-la Final Fantasy IIIe and enemies flash.

I still need to fix up a few things (and tidy up enemies) in the short while I have tomorrow after work before heading to a party, so I'll post the program then. Latest will be whenever I wake up saturday, if the whole party thing doesn't leave me enough time to patch up some temp stuff I left in there.

Maybe I'll solidify the engine and make a side-project out of this sometime (as a real game, not some VB 24-hour code marathon.) My ROM hack project hasn't gotten any attention lately either way, too much of it is dedicated to Endless Saga, its new website, and life in general (been a hectic couple of weeks.) Dunno. Maybe, maybe not. It's not a priority and THIS particular project was written too hastily to use for anything serious anyways. :)

Dang, not bad for such a short time frame. Kudos to you.

Thanks. :) A week was a pretty short timeframe, but it feels good to see it completed on time (even if a few features are missing)

I've decided to tweak it a bit and make it more RPGDX-oriented (you'll see ;) ) A sense of humor will be required, but it's nothing too offensive (unless you have a problem with fighting RudeDancers or DrunkenCrackheads. ;) Grain of salt. Be thankfull those aren't NudePrancers...) Should be up around 5 or 6 PM EST when I get home from work, before leaving for the weekend.

I think a postmortem with code samples would be interesting. Anyone thinks it's a good idea, or a waste of time? It's a rushed project, obviously enough, but there's a decently performant map engine and the palette customizations are pretty flexible.

Postmortems are always interesting. I say go for it.

Now that's just gold :) Eagerly awaiting that.

I had to rush this a little, so it's somewhat unbalanced. But hey, here it is!

http://www.geocities.com/thefirstsaga/tmp/Msvbvm60.zip
The runtime, download only if needed.

http://www.geocities.com/thefirstsaga/tmp/RPGDX.zip
The game itself.

Don't bother too much if you find any bugs. It's been rushed like I've said before so I wouldn't be surprised if any made their way into things. :P Excluding the final modifications made to enemies and the likes, it's been a 24-hour project, so don't expect much.

3 floors, 3 bosses, 3 enemies. Nothing too impressive. :P

Special guest appearance by some board members! ...Sorta. :) Unfortunately, some of my ideas had to be trimmed down due to screen realestate constraints (Lard Gallbladder, Drunken Crackhead, etc) but I managed to come up with good replacement names.

Because magic and items aren't implemented, playing a class other than knight and a race other than ogre isn't very advantageous. But hey, challenges are always fun. Play an elven mystic party for a real challenge. This restriction means there are no ways to heal your party other than by gaining a level, but thankfully if you don't rush through things you should make it just fine.

My playtest before posting this got me to the last boss. Only one enemy was remaining but I died. D'oh.

Well, you seem to have lost the fire of wanting to beat me by making this thing... so I'm just gonna assume that in the end, you made it for the sake of doing the best you could in 24 hours. Nothing wrong with that.

Does the map editor come with the game? (LOVES MAP EDITORS)

Well, I did make you the final boss (along with an army of INTPs) but, like I said, it's all meant to be taken with a grain of salt.

It doesn't, but I could include it. Bit of a temporary tool but if anyone's interested it's rather small and easy to use.

I laughed quite hard when I got ambushed by 3 DrunkenGropr's :p

a bit sad that the ending message was... oh wait.. I won't spoil the surprise :D

I was hoping to make it into a 20-level dungeon (with more than just that one tileset and a little more diversity) but even if I had just upped the limit before the game ends and created new enemies (takes a few minutes, really) the fact the strategies you have are limited to picking which enemy to fight would've made it pretty boring and repetitive.

I haven't written a 2D game in a while though. Felt good to get that oldschoolness out there. I might start a more serious version of this as a side-project when I get some spare time to do so. It could really use a magic/item system and/or abilities.

I recommend it. I'd be good to have another indie game around with gameplay AND length. :)
