I DO have other projects to work on. Some small-fry game like this is a fun distraction to code but not something I want to waste unecessary time on.
Hence, a filler eventually when I won't be able to progress as fast as now with my other work. _________________ Endless Saga

It just seems to me that it would be better to work on an engine in C++ that can do Final Fantasy in 2ghz, as opposed to wrestling with those 3.9 ghz on the SNES, especially considering how far you've gotten.

...You call that "far"? Compared to Endless Saga? _________________ Endless Saga

How should I know? ES is a closed beta, right?

Yeah, because screenshots aren't available and the faq is very adamant about how it doesn't just require a simple email or message on the boards to be added to the betatester list. :) (Though a public release of what the betatesters got their hands on is in the works, now that I know the engine is free of any major bugs and only has a few minor cosmetic problems here and there.)
ES doesn't compare to an oldschool 2D engine in VB. For roughly 24 hours' worth of effort, yeah, that is pretty good, but the game itself isn't too impressive. Really, it's kinda boring, IMHO: there's very little strategy and the novelty of seeing bad name-related jokes as enemies wears off after a playthrough or so. If I wanted to expand on that engine, I'd have to rewrite it because I took a lot of shortcuts that would require some nasty untangling in order to make the deadline (and I'm not too keen on plain text files; only the maps are in binary, the rest is fully editable though error checking is inexistant.)
In any event, I don't use VB for serious projects. There's this little bit of pride in me that just weeps when I do and that keeps telling me to use C++ and a more solid API than the GDI. So the amount of progress I've made is mostly void considering I'd be working in another language...
ES is a walkaround demo with a hefty amount of graphic-related code complete for most aspects of the game. It wouldn't take an extraordinary amount of effort to push it to the point where I can start putting official scenario data in there, so I'd rather focus on that. :) I'll be glad to give pointers and algorithms I've used if anyone wants to work on something like this though.
Edit: I'll work on a postmortem this week. _________________ Endless Saga

Hmm... well I guess this challenge is still on. :)
I'm still working on my entry, but I've got some artwork to share.
Concept art for the opponent. (yes it's pretty bad but at least it's not totally out of proportion)
The opponent, frame by frame (100%)
The opponent, frame by frame (200%)
The battle arena
The going is slow, because those action shots are a bitch to draw. I decided against showing mirror views of the sprites here, figuring that it would be pointless.
Comment?

Isn't that opponent an edit of Bagen (not sure of the exact name, it's been awhile) from ff4? Not trying to accuse or anything, just wondering. It looks pretty similar.

He's got a cape and he's in uniform. He's 16x16. Some level of similarity is inevitable.

I know, I was just referring to the style in which it's done, proportions, etc. I wasn't accusing you of anything, I was just curious.

Now the style? It's a mix of Final Fantasy V and VI. I've tried others, but SD is the only way to really bring across the personality in 16x16 pixels. Emphasis on the face is essential.

Yes, I consider this thread my crowning achievement. To think that I so impassioned a man with hatred so deep, that he made me the final boss of his game.

Man if a guy made you the final boss of his game, you would probably feel the same. Yeah, definitely an honor. :P
