As requested in the "screenshots from old projects" thread, I've put up my little "Dungeon Crawl" roguelike game on the web for you to play.

Dungeon Crawl

(Because this was programmed in Director, you'll need Shockwave 10 Player from Macromedia to play it.)

This is ancient stuff, many years old, so don't expect a lot of spit and polish, but it should be functional enough to play. Please excuse the embarassing art in places.

I stripped out all the shareware registration stuff, so it should be completely unhobbled (it used to block you from going below dungeon level 3). If you find any bugs, just drop me a line. There is a known issue with key responsiveness in some computer/browser configurations that I'm trying to pin down (like I said, this is ancient code). In the mean time, just try a different browser or OS if you run into that problem and it annoys you too much to play.

Let me know how what you think.

Heh. Sorry about that. Typical RPG convention - you start out fighting things like rats. If it's any consolation, it's supposed to be a *giant* rat.

Also, watch out for the hobgoblins in the early levels. You'll have to level up a bit before you can take care of them.

I got my ass beat right off the bat several times. Had to go into dungeon and avoid critters while hunting for gold, then buy armor and stuff, then go back in and fight. I always have a hard time remembering the way back out though heh.

cute game. Though odd that you have to press a button for picking up treasure... and doing pretty much everything else heh.

My quest was cut short by a skeleton, which made short work of my character.

Heh. Yeah, like in many roguelikes, you have to tread carefully until you get a few levels and some gear. If you're having difficulty, you might consider starting with the barbarian archetype until you get the hang of the game, because he's the easiest to survive with early on because he tends to have the best combat stats.

Also, be sure to use the "rest" command (defaults to the "R" key) to heal up after each battle.

Hmm... It must have been late when I was trying the game, because I could have sworn that "r" was for "reset". Oh, well. I guess I have to try again tonight. :)

Well, you can map the keys onto whatever you like, but there's no "reset" command in the game (that I am aware of).

I think you'll find that the "rest" command will make things a lot easier for you as you play.

Here are some other tips that aren't mentioned in the help screen/page:

Dialog boxes have up to three buttons along the bottom. Instead of clicking on the item, you can type "1", "2", or "3" to select the buttons.

If you want to quickly reload your game, an easy way is to use the "back" button in your browser and then the "forward" button. This will take you back to the main menu, where you can quickly load the game again.

Unidentified items can only be sold at Julie's, and you get a fixed price: 15gp. Mystara can identify items for you at the cost of 50gp. Thus, only identify items that you suspect will be worth at least 65gp. Also, the "weapons lore" and "armor lore" will give you a chance to recognize items when you acquire them, so getting those skills can be worth a fair amount of money in the long run.

Since you often raise skills when you go up a level, it's a good idea to get as many skills under your belt as you can early on, so that they can be going up as you go up in level. There's an upper limit to the amount of training you can buy in any given skill, after which you can only improve it with experience, so the faster you get your skills up, the higher your skills will be in the long run.
