Whoa - I don't visit for two days and it's taken down? Quite unexpected... I think it was evolving into a wonderful community, even if I had doubts about it at first. What happened?

I think I'll offer to host it. I've got very good hosting that doesn't cost me anything, so why not... I don't want to see it dead again.

Mandrake, don't let people tear you down for not wanting to host organizing a game about pedophilia. The concept of free speech in no way obligates you to participate or host in speech you disagree with, and only the most myopic, intolerant idiot would fault a new father for not wanting to aid and abet making a game out of the sexual assault of children.

If nothing else, those posters were putting you at legal risk, considering the recent rulings about child pornography and obscenity. And they probably got all of us stuck on a watch list as a result of their actions. Yes, it's a free country, and if those guys want to build that puerile game and take the legal risk, they are free to do that - on their own servers. You have every right to make moves to defend yourself against potential legal risks.

Personally, I don't think that you needed to take down GDR, but I totally understand why you did. Don't apologize for it. People should be mad at the juveniles who created the circumstances that basically forced your hand ethically, not you.

I feel bad about this- maybe I should've given more warning. But my main concern was google or the internet archive spidering the site and archiving that conversation. Things on the web have a sort of permanance these days.

So, I'm sorry I took it down, but I can't host it anymore. It's already moving to new hands.

Essentially, this guy pops over and announces that he is working on a project (a MMOG) that involves an element of pedophilia. I immediately ask him to note whether this is done as intentional satire, or if this is a serious project aimed at deviants.

He notes that it is satirical in nature, so I let the thread live and go to bed, as he has posted a message with a link to the project site, and asked for help creating some graphics. Upon waking this morning, I see the thread has turned somewhat sour, and lock it. I then report the thread to the other admins/mods, where we would at that point discuss what actions we'll be taking.

About half an hour later, Mandrake deletes the thread.

About half an hour later, Mandrake deletes the board.

About half an hour later, we've secured a new host.

/fin.

I have nothing else to say.

I wasn't around when the thread got locked- I sadly came in too late really. Although, I do think he didn't want it to just be a parody. He kept saying how he wanted pedophiles to live out their fantasy's virtually so that they wouldn't do it in the real world. Which is, of course, not how that works. But I digress, and don't feel like giving a basic psyche lecture right now.

I wanted the thread deleted instead of locked for the reason I said above (I don't want someone/a bot crawling through the web to find a sight I hosted had something about pedophelia on it. It's not too hard to do a whois and find out who owns the DN for kapo.ws). I posted a quick thread explaining why I did it.

A few moments later I get several responses to that thread specifying pedophelia again. I realised that the only way to stop the tide of *some idiots* from posting about it was to take it down. I'm sorry I didn't discuss it with anyone, but it wasn't their asses on the line. And I really didn't want a site mentioning pedophelia hosted on the same domain as the site that contained pictures of my daughter.

If you guys can't understand it, that's fine. But it wasn't up for discussion.

Okay, I lied. I have more to say.

I had probably made it halfway through LeoDraco's post when I locked it (although Leo's post was rather brilliant), so I hadn't made it to the point where he made the statement about the project going beyond just satire, otherwise I would have asked for permission to nuke the post myself.

I can see why it was taken down. Although fantasies are just fantasies, there's a line that needs to be laid down somewhere, and Mandrake chose this to be that line. It's his decision, and considering the situation, it's a justified personal stance.

Justified, because this stuff is borderline illegal and definately not the kind of stuff that should be encouraged even through fantasy. And personal, because it's not technically illegal nor immoral (what with it being simulated and with nobody "real" involved in it), but certainly something many people would object strongly to even if there's no actual kiddie being stripped down and subjected to sick stuff involved.

So hey, good call, I guess. :o
