When you hear "Car Chase", what events spring to mind?

I think of the car chase scene from The French Connection, which is kind of the quintessential car chase. I also think of the various Bond movies, which, despite their goofiness, continue to be a great showcase vehicle (heh) for cutting-edge stunt work, much of it consisting of vehicle chases. For instance, I thought the car chase in For Your Eyes Only, where Bond has to evade the bad guys in a little beat-up bug instead of some tricked out Aston-Martin, was pretty good.

Why are you asking about car chases? Making a game?

I'm sorry, I probably should have explained myself.

A couple of years ago, I made a simple game in Qbasic called The Hunt, largely inspired by a slightly obscure C64 I liked, Road Course.

Recently, I've been learning how to program games for a Gameboy Advance, and I figured (as an exercise) that it would be a lot easier to port one of my old games to the GBA than to try and design something original.

I'm porting "The Hunt" - but the original game is a little bit... dull, to be honest. So I'm going to add some new tracks, do up the graphics, things like that. I was looking for ideas for things to add - I've already got a few of the new tracks in mind, but there's probably a lot of stuff I haven't thought off, since I'm not really into action movies or that sorta thing.

For example: The first few events in the game are that you're being rammed by a police car, so to avoid it and the oncomming trafic, you have to move out on the footpath. After that, you come to a broken bridge, which you "jump over" by steering into the shortest gap. Next, you come to a crossroad at a red light, and you've got to swerve in between the traffic to get to the other side. After that, you come to a one way street, and so on.

So, em, yeah - when you hear "Car Chase", what events spring to mind? :)

The freeway scene in The Matrix Reloaded: if you have not seen it, it is a long scene, full of people impossibly jumping from vehicles to other vehicles, guns being shot off, cars exploding, motorcycles being driven against traffic, and a samurai sword.

Well, you might consider picking up a couple action movies and just watching some of the car chase scenes. Some good ones to watch include:

* Pretty much any James Bond movie
* The French Connection
* Matrix: Reloaded, as mentioned previously
* Gone in 60 seconds
* Fast and the Furious (haven't seen it, but I hear it's got good car chase scenes in it)
* The Road Warrior

Some nifty chase elements I've seen are:

* Driving into oncoming traffic (Matrix does this)
* Driving straight down a hillside cross-country while foes are going down switchbacks (For Your Eyes Only)
* Chasing while in a non-optimal vehicle (VW bug, double-decker London bus, tanker full of flammable chemicals, etc.)
* Chasing someone up on an overhead freeway while you drive through neighborhood streets underneath (French Connection)
* Similar to above, chasing a speedboat going through a channel in a car, or vice versa
* Trying to escape a network of well-organized policemen in a downtown city block
* Semi vs. army of motorcycles and hotrods (Road Warrior)
* Chased by helicopters
* Chicken
* Driving up an opening drawbridge for a jump (Gone in 60 Seconds)
* Foes trying to bump you off cliff
* Get there before the bomb goes off
* Don't hit the pedestrians

Hope this helps!

This is a bit rubbish, but I'm managed to complete the port of the original to the GBA. All that remains now is to update the game with music and new graphics and new levels... but that's going to have to wait until I finish my exams, so this'll have to do for now.

Check it out here

Ouch, way hard. I made my way up to the big roadblock with alot of copcars. This could get good with some new gfx. Is it hard to code GBA?

I made a few changes last night, which should go a long way to making it more 'playable'.

Here you go!

BadMrBox: Not nearly as hard as I thought it would be :) It's a really interesting machine to code for, I'd recommend it to anyone. There are some great tutorials out there for it - try searching for TONC and GbaJunkie.
