I'm the new webmaster for the kung fu club at uni and I just want some crits on what I did today.

I'm thinking of darkening the background tile and brightening the links to enhance readability.

(I know it resembles "Wilderness" on csszengarden. Sue me.)

I went ahead and made those changes with the colors and like it much better this way.

I think it looks pretty good, and deadly. The text is clear and easy to read. Navigating seems simple enough. I like how it's easy on the eyes, and you use a similar palette throughout the site. Good job. :)

EDIT: But I would shrink the text size for...

It would probably look better if the "Schedule" and "Menu" sidebars were floating at the same height from the top of the window; as they appear right now, they are somewhat jarring. Also, as a personal thing, I think having a little margin-bottom on the menu would look good. (At the resolution that I am looking at it with (1024x768), the Menu sidebar is the longest element in the page, so it rests rather annoyingly against the bottom of the browser window.)

Also, I would like to point out that for your document is not a properly conforming XML document; while the validator is not immediately picking it up, you have not declared the namespace from which your XML elements are defined. (Also, as that link should discuss, you are not properly assinging attributes in your elements.)

Just on the validation, a note that there is no concept of "relative" height in CSS. Where it pumps out errors in the validation, there's also a lack of quotes around the value of an attribute. Recommended course of action would be to simply remove it, or substitute with a non percentage-based height.

For a site with a dark theme, it's actually come out looking alright. It'd be nice if the left and right side dealies lined up vertically, for coherence.

And I like the Firefox recommendation at the bottom. :)

The height=100% in the <div id="main"> was because IE was being a cock face. I just forgot to take that out. For the footer, I'm not quite sure how to always float that at the bottom of the page. If the posts were long enough I would assume that they would cover it up somehow. I'll fiddle around with it.

Thanks for the comments. I moved the schedule menu and made the page a little longer so that the menu wouldn't be the lowest thing.

I woud personally put in a little more padding between the centeral content area and the sidebars.

The comment about sucky browsers seems a bit unprofessional.

It's a college club website. Professional doesn't really enter into it.

Besides, http://www.metal-archives.com/ the same comment is here and they get millions of hits a day.

Looks good. The only thing that leaps out at me is that your white-on-black text graphics on the right ("Wushu?" "Our Club" and "Community") and the header at top ("Texas Wushu" and the graphic of the guy holding a sword) look really crunchy. Some anti-aliasing would be easier on the eye.

Other than that, it looks better than 90% of the web sites out there. I especially like the ragged bordering you've got going - nice touch.

I'll add in some anti-aliasing when I go back to coding the PHP for the site. I actually tried to do AA for it, while keeping transparency. This is a stupid idea, since the background is always going to be black behind those pics, so.. I know exactly what to do ;)

As for the firefox thing... I'll change it if I get any complaints from club members. If not, I'll keep it for the humor of the thing.
