Safari's Canvas tag has been apparently adopted by WHATWG.

http://whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/#html5

Firefox included support for the tag last February.

With this tag, it is now possible to access the browser display directly using a standardized process. No more struggling with gargantuan tables, and an alternative to table-based map engines. Canvas makes the web browser at least as veritable a gaming platform as say, QB. Already several small games and even a few 3-D raytracing demos have been done with the tag.

My own plans for the tag include overlaying a Canvas element overtop of the SceneLion table-based map, and using it to create Chrono Trigger-style geometry effects.

It would appear that together Apple and Mozzilla can positively influence standards development on the Internet, a welcome change after a half-decade of apparent stagnation.

Seriously, will anyone use that tag? Html is no programming language for video games. If you want a game that can run in an Internet browser, use Flash. (I would suggests Java applets, but no one seems to have newer versions of Java installed.)

Many people will use it, because a lot of people don't like depending on proprietary technology to get their point across. There are enough people that will use it that it has been agreed to by several development teams of thousands. Although some people would question the benefit of the technology because they themselves feel more comfortable with the proprietary Macromedia Flash, this is not the prevailing view. Mozilla and Apple both speak for millions of likeminded people.

(Emphasis mine.)

References for these claims, please? I'm skeptical there are many game developers talking about this yet, let alone there being "millions of likeminded people" behind such talk, but if there is, I'd like to read more about it from them.

The tag has only been in Firefox five months. It was released without much fanfare. IE doesn't support it. (probably because they haven't released a new browser in half a decade) There is a dominant frame of mind at Mozilla and WHATWG, which I can measure by the degree to which I agree with what they are doing. I never meant to say that the majority of people on this forum were in favor of the tag, although I'm sure Unknown, Noidveidt, and DeveloperX are glad to see it around.

But there is a definite mindset on this forum that isn't representative of at least 1/4 of the population. I'd like to see some of that 1/4 makes their view known alongside its opposing quarter, because I know I'm not alone in my views.

i didn't think you meant to say anything about RPGDX members, so don't worry about that.

Basically what I'm asking for is links that back up the things you said like "thousands of developers", "millions of likeminded people," "prevailing view." If that's just you exaggerating or speculating, fine, but if not, I want to read the articles those guys are writing about the canvas tag.

"You can use statistics to prove anything. 40% people know that."

Well, the multimedia elements do look like fun, even a little promising. The technology seems more targetted at improving the way client-side forms are handled.

If this hits the mainstream, might even muck around with it myself a bit.

Like others have mentioned before, more serious stuff I'd leave to another language in a less restrictive environment, but for JS stuck inside a browser, it looks alright.

Well, it definately looks interesting and I might mess with it for a little bit too. Time to dust off those javascript books... :)
