i was thinking that an standard attack begins a "move" ... by holding the attack button and then enterring a key sequence for a move and releasing the attack button you execute the move in the direction you are facing.

Hmm... that seems like it could work. This would work very well with MMORPG since every character/class would have their own specialty moves, and they have to use it to their best ability to defeat other players. Casting spells could be done in the same. So in order to cast a cure spell, you got to enter the 10 key sequence correctly or it will fail. Higher level spells have longer more difficult sequences but results are more powerful.

hey thats a good idea for the spells ... i was thinking spells could also be proximity based so you could hit people around the enemy you're attacking.
i'm not sure why but i feel like eating at taco bell tonight for dinner ...

Holding 'attack' to key-in a sequence is a bit non-intuitive. It wouldn't be as easy to implement, but maybe you could allow the sequence to be entered at any time, so long as the keys are pressed quickly enough, and use 'attack' to do the move itself. But I'm not sure how well this would work from a top-down perspective.
Or it could just be placed up to an automatic facing system like in Seiken Densetsu 3, where your character faces and attacks towards whatever enemy is closest.

Hm.. I played the game, but I actually don't remember it facing enemies automatically.
For this key sequence thing to work in a top down mode would be a challenging task. I think a target lock system would be required for something like this. Once the enemy is in your target lock, you can hold the "special moves" key, then execute your sequence of commands.
Otherwise, limit your moves to easy to execute attack sequences. Like forward, forward, attack. Or attack, attack, forward, pause 1 sec, attack, etc..

that was what i was thinking, nothing long and drawn out ... i don't think it needs a target lock. i think moves should launch in the direction you're facing, and if you miss, you miss. those are the breaks, get down!
