PostPosted: Thu Apr 26, 2007 1:46 pm    Post subject: how to extract the game .dat files? [quote]

Hi,
Help me pls. Im not a programmer nor game maker, but I'm now playing one game and it is fun. This game has some .dat files in its directory (it may be some essential system files or savefile of this game). all i want is to extract those files and explore them around (one of them should contain some images, sound effects and music). I also really want to tract down the use of these .dat files when the game runs. How? Thanks. I have tried WinRAR, ISObuster and the other ISO managers but no good. Help me please!

Depends on the game. A .dat file could be anything.

If it's made with Allegro, for example, you could explore it with the... Allegro data file tool, whatever it's called.

It might be a custom format that the game developer uses for his game. In that case, there's not much you can do.

You could try looking at it in a hex editor or just opening it in a text editor to see if there's any text, but neither option will be very useful.

thanks. I'm trying.

Those .dat files are more than 200 MBs for each. I don't think a text editor programme works. How to determine what format is of those .dat files since it always says it is .dat in Windows?

I have tried with ISOBuster to view the sector of those .dat files. It begins with "DPMX" like most other games' .dat files. AND it lists the *.bmp files (like "title.bmp", "confiq.bmp" and so on) used in the game. Mmmm... maybe it is waht i'm looking for. I have tried extracting using the same program but I got only one TAO file that doesn't work at all. Any other way to extract this file?

The game is Hunks Workshop. It is a game for gay. My girlfriend really wanna see some uncensored scenes in game. So I'm trying to please her. Weird?

...uhm....no comment.
you need to write your own software to extract the files.
look into the source code for the GNU archive tools.
goodluck.
