i've been lazy lately so i don't know if i should make my online rpg open source. i think people would hack it and make their own clients, bots and shit. on the other side it will be finished faster. i could also just change the encryption password when it's all done.
what you guys think about that?? what would you do?

I wouldn't count too much on a horde of programmers to descend upon your engine and complete it. I open-sourced the ARC Legacy engine a few years ago and nobody ever touched it. So I closed it again later on. _________________ Mark Hall

I'd suggest not opening the full source. Maybe just the engine, not the gameplay..that is, if its properly seperated from the engine. On the other hand, you have spent alot of money on this project and its really up to you to decide if its worth the risk of letting others have access to the source. It gives you a 50/50 chance of coming out on top in the end. _________________ Principal Software Architect

Of course I think you should consider going open source, since the online RPG project I'm involved in is released as GPL (The Mana World). The project being free software, it has attracted a lot of developers over the past three years. It's still hard to keep an active team going, but when it would have been a closed project it would have run out of its 9 lives a long time ago.
Another thing you should consider is whether there isn't already a project very similar to what you want to do that you can either help out with or base your work on. I wanted to develop an online RPG for quite a while, but I ended up deciding to join The Mana World project instead. I couldn't have realized the amount of code and content we have now in 10 years.
