By "delusion" are you acknowledging that old school CRPGs as a dying genre?

To me, CRPGs appear to be one of the genres with a lot of competition and it's hard to have a successful project there as newcomer. Lucky exceptions always exist, but you intrude a market that has a lot of offers already, and you'll have to show players why your project is the one they should try.
I wouldn't say the genre as a whole is dying. Looks very alive and kicking to me.

I don't think the 2d RPG genre will die completely for a long time.
It's not going to be as prevalent as it once was because there's alot more options now. So long as there's people like us to play them, the genre won't die. People are still buying 2d RPGs from the late 80's on handheld systems (e.g. Dragon Warrior I & II for Gameboy). There will be people playing 2d RPGs for a long time.
After all, people still play pen-and-paper RPGs even though video game RPGs are available. Granted, pen-and-paper RPGs are a bit different, but 2d RPGs are a bit different from 3d RPGs.
Frankly, I don't like most 3d RPGs. I don't mind RPGs that use 3d models for their characters or something like that, but I like to keep the regular overhead view common to 2d RPGs. Neverwinter Nights is the only 3d RPG I can think of that has an overhead view, though it also makes the camera spin around annoyingly for some reason.
Even so, that doesn't mean that it's easy to make money developing 2d RPGs. The technology necessary to make an RPG is commonplace enough that a 12-year-old can do it with a tool like RPG Maker (for some console). The problems are the following:
1. generating enough content
2. making the game play somehow new and appealing
3. including something that separates the game from the other million RPGs that people can download for free or buy for $5 out of a bargain bin once they're 3 years old

Yeah, I guess the RPGMaker community is still alive an kicking. My problem with RPGMaker is that it's too generic, as in, same old RTP graphics and same old gameplay. I guess people don't program their RPGs anymore.. (except us)
