PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2009 12:04 am    Post subject: K9 Concept Art Of The Day Thread [quote]

This is an attempt to kickstart myself into finishing up a backlog of concept art for my project Kali 9.

I almost hesitate to call this an "Of The Day Thread" but I will do my best to post K9 related quick concept art sketches once a day, excluding weekends (if I do post on a weekend, consider it a bonus). Lets see how long I can keep this up.

Anyway lets get started. Here is today's sketch.

The 3 Fates
Antigonists in the game (From bottom to top: Lyra - The Event, Anki - The Ruin & Coluhua - The Source)

Kinda feels like it can go on a DVD cover or movie poster. I like!

Fridays are always busy for me at work. I'm not 100% on this one. I rushed it.

Mondays are quieter for me at work. I can put more polish into a sketch.

The City of Koshingo

Okay man, I hope you don't mind, but I stole your sketch image and made a crisp version...

Don't worry though, I'm not using it..I was only using your sketch as a test for a technique to create crisp line art from sketches :)

Your work is AMAZING man! Keep up the great work!

(edit)
haha...mine looks like it lost a little detail here and there...like a coloring book page XD

(edit)
Okay, tweaked the settings of the conversion and this looks better I think:

(edit) ..oh and if you would like me to remove these images from my server, I will do so. I don't want you to think that I'm stealing your art. .. I only removed your signature from the images because the conversion was not legible. Again, your work is simply amazing! You have much talent!

sorry to those expecting the larger images but I made them smaller to save some bandwidth.

It's no problem man, I don't mind. your probably using a similar technique that I use before I color them. I'm basically using those style sketches in place of cutscenes.

You wouldn't believe the amount of work and practice I had to do before I could draw like this. I used to be a programmer, I pretty much lost 90% of my programming knowledge in the process. Eh thats the way it goes I guess I just couldn't hold on to both.

good catch, it's actually their sun and a sister planet.

Here's today's drawing. I cleaned it up a bit

I'm not sure what I'm calling this monster. I was thinking a boss but it's not menancing enough. It's sort of a pokemon from hell, so it will probably end up a regular monster.

Yeah, I figured that you were doing cut-scene stills.
My technique is simple; I import the sketch into Inkscape, and then I trace the bitmap into a vector image, and then export the vector to a png; I then open that into gimp to give the white background;but I save an xcf in gimp so that I keep layers, and if I want to color, I can keep the line art on top with a transparent background; and colored cells underneath.

Oh I'd believe it all right. I've been studying art for over 17 years and my skill still doesn't compare. ..though I am like 80% programmer, 10% musician, and 10% artist XD
Programming keeps me from blowing my brains out..so I think I'll stick with what I'm good at.

Hah...I was thinking that it was a planet ..cool good to know my intuition was right.

I love the character's design. Very cool!

ok... that doesn't look simple at all lol. We do different methods after all. there is a convert bitmap to vector function with flash. After messing with the settings I can get a vector version of my lineart then it's just a matter of locking off the shades/highlights and filling in colors. I'm pretty much incompetant with photoshop/gimp etc. I can do basic stuff but anything else requires me to scour for tutorials.

I'll admit I didn't finish today's drawing so instead I'm posting a little something I did a few days before I started this thread.

The Main Antagonist - Kei Mishima w/her nagitana
<cliche>Once Reilynn's best friend now her greatest Enemy.</cliche>

I hate to do this but after tomorrow's drawing I might have to take a break from this thread until Monday. I have to do some artwork for an exhibition in a few months and I don't want to procrastinate anymore than I have already.

I use Linux as my development platform.
Flash isn't an option for me.
I am still learning new things to do in GIMP, but its really really easy once you get past the oddness of the way it works in comparison to something like photoshop.

Take a break! :) Get your exhibition artwork finished.
Keeping daily pic posts is not a necessity lol.
