PostPosted: Fri Oct 11, 2002 2:46 pm    Post subject: I hate stat. screens [quote]

so in light of that I am planing on making a visable stat system for my game.

ie the character is the actuall proff that you have stats..
take strenght for instance the higher this "stat" gets the player will get buffer.

only problem is acually showing such stats

I have a clue on what
STR, DEX, and perhapse AGL would look like but on the rest of the stats

INT, WIS, CON, CHR,
I'm not sure on how to show them (jewelry or tatoos perhapse)

DEF and OFF would be armor and weapons (I think)

oh yeah that reminds me along with this I basically hate all "screens" so I will use a visable Item system (ala Rune)

any suggestions...ie other screen I could banish from the game or stat showing suggestions?

I have an idea for charisma, not visible, but have a dictionary of euphemisms for speech. So if you have high charisma, the engine will pull out a nice word for a tagged word.... either that or write entirely different scripts. Some help I am o_O. Wisdom should be a bigger head, and intelligence should make him carry around a book. I dunno, just rambling. If you don't like my ideas, I like the jewlery idea too. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like a sweet idea, I think that upcoming non-linear RPG for the XBox (I forget the name) uses a system exactly like that, where your character's muscles would grow the more you used a weapon and if you were really wise and used magic a lot then your hairline would start to recede. If I find the article about it then I'll send the link in your direction.

I have an idea for intelligence. Use a lot of "!" "?" and the like over the head of the character whenever anything happens. Then, randomly pick from a "???" "?" "!?!" "!". The higher the int, the more from the "!" spectrum you get.

Oh yeah, con aka constitution aka vitality. That's just how healthy you are. Make the character start off with sickly green skin, then as it rises give them a more healthy glow.

I agree with the Cha idea completely. Replace low brow with mid brow and high brow words and phrases as Cha rises. "Suxor" "That sucks!" "I don't like it!" "Destable!" "Please have mercy!"

For intelligence increasing I'd suggest making the eyes get brighter, not the first thing you'd expect, but I think it'd make the point...

Wisdom on the other hand is learned knowledge, so I'd suggest the hairline/brow thing for that too, after all experience = wisdom. Maybe you could even give the character deep wrinkles on their face.

I agree with the skin tone marker constitution, also a character with low constitution could have like, shaking hands and deep set eyes.

For Charisma, things like dialogue filters, hand gestures, and maybe more expressive facial expressions would do the trick.

The way I always wanted to do it is, instead of having numbers, there should just be a "confidence" column. It's fairly easy to add, and it still makes sense.

Maybe he means like a roman columb somewhere on the screen that gets bigger as your charisma goes up (like in the caesar series games)?

No, I mean, it would have the stat, and then the confidence, like this

Trait Confidence
Strength High
Speed High
Stamina Content
Dexterity Unsure

The character's traits would seem to be determined by personality, when in fact they are just representations of numbers
