PostPosted: Thu May 07, 2009 10:26 pm    Post subject: Tragic characters [quote]

I'm creating a presentation of tragic character traits which form the crux of most console RPG storylines nowadays. These are traits which can be held by real people, but commonly find expression only in fantasy because they are recessive and rare. (thankfully)

The fundamental characteristic of these persons is inability to cope with internal conflicts successfully, which leads to their carriage outward into the external environment. A pattern is evident which leads to all kinds of tragic events and moral ambiguities. A typical device is to give a character background terrible enough to "justify" their evolution into sociopaths/amoral types, on the assumption that people are molded completely by their earliest experiences, the same becoming somehow "fixed" and unchangeable. I doubt that that experience has anything to with it, and believe instead that internal disposition brings on the negative experience by irritating people around them at an unrecognizable, personally discomforting level. This discomfort in turn leads to tremendous overreaction and a generally all around terrible outcome of events surrounding the individual. Misery loves company: an innate despot of a father may terribly malign a despot child, as was the case with Hitler. Overall, the engine seems to arise from fixed self-images/internal filtering systems of the brain, which in turn create around oneself a self-schema of being a person of such troubles who lives within world fundamentally troubled as such.

Is anyone able to use this? Do you find it useful? If not, what seems to be missing that you can't use it? What else do you need to know?

As usual, I have no idea what you're on about - stuff like that just sounds like a lot of words with no point to them to me, and I sure don't see any use for it.

Something like The Hero with a Thousand Faces I can see the point of, and if what you're talking about is something similar, it might be that it's just your presentation that needs work.

However, I wanted to point out that the link doesn't work - it's a link to edit the post, not to view it, the correct one should, I believe, be this

Yeah I sorta have trouble seeing things from the vantagepoint of people who aren't familiar with what I am.

I made a new thread about this kind of thing on another forum. Not for the faint of heart... (...)
